Original message
I just donated $50 to Air America Radio.
In an ideal world, they wouldn't need my donation, since they'd be raking in so much ad revenue.

The real world is less-than-ideal in a zillion ways, and I'm happy to support a service I regularly use.

I hope our donations help them to expand to more cities and upgrade to stronger transmitters.

1. I did too!
You put it very well.

And, I'm letting XM know that I appreciate their carrying Air America; that is why I subscribed to their service.

3. I plan to donate and beg them to come to my market (Vegas)
They're in Reno, for crying out loud, so they should have an easy enough time coming here. And they're worth every penny. :)

4. Radio and TV stations can't just "upgrade"
to stronger transmitters. They first have to get FCC approval, and that can take forever if it goes through at all. The FCC has all kinds of regulations about how much power stations can have based on where they're located, what sort of transmitters they have, etc. The idea is to keep audio order; if it were purely money-buys-wattage, without regulation the airwaves would be a bigger clusterfuck than I-45 north of Houston.

it probably helps to have money for staff.

7. Donating to AAR won't help that
Petitions for transmitter alterations must be made by representatives of the station owners. The only say AAR would have would be in pushing the stations to make the changes.

8. This seems fishy to me.
I went to the site and the blue and fluorescent scheme did not look official. Further I have never heard Randy, Sam & Janean or Mike Malloy mention the needing of donations. Could this be a scam?

12. It is linked from the main webpage.
Go to
http://www.airamericaradio.com/

and click on the top-right where it says "Air America Wants You! Join the Associates Program!' and you'll get to the page I linked to.

Regarding the Air America hosts, Janeane Garofalo once said that they wouldn't ask listeners to send AAR money. Apparently, there has been a change, though I doubt this was her decision.

9. They should just go public.
I'm an recovering stockbroker, and I've seen far smaller and less important companies sell millions in stock offerings. It's also a great chance to let the listeners own a small piece of something wonderful and important. Christ, even the free market republicans could trade it and make money because that's what it's really all about for them. If they hate the idea, short the stock. Either way we all win.

The idea of AAR is to promote liberalism.

I've bought t-shirts from the website, but this is a more direct way to help AAR.

11. The idea is not to just keep them afloat.
I read elsewhere on DU that they are trying to raise 5-8 million dollars to expand rapidly in rural markets where several stations have just become available and time is a factor. I think they are doing fine as is, but this is an extra and unforseen opportunity they are trying to capitalize on immediately.

17. Thanks for the tip...I just donated to AAR too...
I'm truly happy I can help...I listen AAR on my computer and hopefully they'll be able to come to my town...I live in an area exactly the size AAR is looking to grow and expand...about 100k people in the area on the coast between San Francisco and Portland, OR!

Even if Air America Radio does offer an affiliate here...I'll still continue to donate to them. I want AAR to be a huge monster progress, liberal network!!! I want everyone to able to hear Randi Rhodes, Mike Malloy and Thom Hartmann over the air waves!!!!!

19. re Thom Hartmann
I never bothered to listen to Thom Hartmann when he was only available over the internet, even though people here said good things about him.

But now that he is on "Air America Minnesota" on Sundays, I listen as I'm driving on Sundays.

It shows what a difference being on the airwaves makes.

I have sufferd through enough of their trash ads like Wendy the predator and all the other annoying crap they spew constantly between segments... I am not paying for something that I already suffered enough for. Their ads are a disgrace and they obviously never had a clue about the demographic they are serving. There are many progressive businesses and apparently they have never pursued them.

No way I'm going to donate money and still have to listen to a bunch of fucking garbage advertisement.

25. Ok., but have you tried
turning off the volume during the commercials?

There is a pattern to when the shows start and stop.

First content-segment starts 7 minutes past the hour, last content-segment starts 53 minutes past the hour, etc.
