Cheney pulled the plug on Able Danger?
How did this gem from Dailykos slip by without raising more eyebrows on DU?

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/22/14849/9206

The timing makes sense. Bush delegated everything to Cheney in those early months. I do recall Cheney was planning to streamline all of our Natural Disaster Management through FEMA. tee-hee.

1. Shocking.
However would he get his new Pearl Harbor if people actually saw it coming and tried to prevent it?

3. I'm not sure at what point he intervened?
The Dailykos info is a bit unclear. Did he stop it back in 2001? Or are they referring to gagging the witnesses that are now testifying in the investigation?

Cobweb is an interesting codename. Cobweb to imply obstruction? Or Cobweb as in, "Oh what a wicked web he wove?"

with China. I watched the beginning of the hearing (and will continue the rest as soon as I can get a chance). In the beginning Weldon briefly touched on Rice/Stamford and Chinese espionage. Al Qaeda was not the only group that Able Danger monitored.

5. "Able Danger" is the name of the secret military program
that had broken with posse comitates (sp?) and had spied on people on domestic turf (that right belongs to the FBI). They uncovered what the FBI should have uncovered. That the men who would later orchestrate 9/11 were on our soil in 2000.

What makes Able Danger interesting to me is that it sounds like key Republicans knew about it, but I have yet to hear one top ranking Clinton staffer involved with it. Dennis Hasteret knew about it in 2000 and it seems that Cheney knew about it in 2001.

The agents from Able Danger wanted to tell the Clinton Administration what they knew, but they were shut down back in 2000 by the lawyers, because they feared that they would be reprimanded for breaking with posse comitates.(sp?}

7. Thanks, so Clinton knew nothing about "Able Danger" and what
...it was doing and the lawyers for the military who organized "Able Danger" prevented the agents/operatives of this secret investigative group from going to the Clinton White House to tell what they did know early on about possible terrorist plans to hit the targets of 9/11 because they knew they were engaged in something totally illegal by the military. So who knew about them and what they were doing? When were they formed and why were key republicans privy to their goings on while the Clinton administration were kept in the dark? Sounds like a military/republican coup de tate conspiracy to me.

12. I think you had two very corrupt organizations clashing until now it's
seamless. I believe the military, which has operated outside the U.S. for generations, has picked up some very bad habits. It probably comes from seeing alot of people with diplomatic immunity getting away with a lot of sorry stuff; then it follows that they would defend their own against foreign laws and may do some unscrupulous things to do it; then you add a cadre of people back home who are treating them like cannon fodder and who are cutting away at their retirement funds, pensions and other things that give a human being security.

What do you end up with? People who are ultimately out for their own interest and who will listen to anyone who promises rewards if they break a few rules. Does that sound patriotic? Well, patriotic the Republican way. That kind of person has been convinced that our country is no longer worth fighting for in its entirety. Pay close attention and follow the Bush money. He's greasing anyone that doesn't get in his way, and starving everyone else. I don't think it's an accident that Halliburton and others are siftening our money. I think they're preparing for the big robbery of the U.S. I really don't believe the top players in Halliburton will be around ten years from now. I expect they'll be living on protected islands in China by then. No one can do what they are doing to us and expect to retire happily in Nantucket.

DIA Agents were ordered to put yellow Post-its over Atta's face and the face's of 3 other 9/11 terrorists

"We were directed to take those 3M yellow stickers and place them over the faces of Atta and the other terrorists and pretend they didn't exist," the intelligence officer told GSN."

Intel agents Michael Shaffer and Scott Philpott have confirmed Rep. Weldon's claims that a chart with Atta's face, soon the photos of 3 other members of the 9-11 terror team, were known to DIA team Able Danger by early 2000.

This diary will show that Pete Schoomaker and Philip Zelikow are two of the main Perpetraitors in this scandal, that they deliberately withheld information from the President of the United States that would have prevented 9/11, that they and their neo-con rulers Let It Happen On Purpose.

Of this there can no longer be any doubt.

Senate May Hold Hearings on Able Danger, Info Sharing
Thursday, August 25, 2005

Able Danger (search) is the code name for a military-intelligence unit that apparently learned a year before the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that lead hijacker Mohamed Atta (search) and other terrorists were already in the United States.

One of the central Able Danger claims — that military lawyers blocked the sharing of the Atta information from the FBI in the late summer and early fall of 2000 — will be a focus of the committee's if a hearing takes place, FOX News has confirmed.

Some analysts involved with Able Danger have recently gone public with their findings, saying they were discouraged from looking further into Atta, and their attempts to share their information with the FBI were thwarted, because Atta was a legal foreign visitor at the time.

"This story needs to be told. The American people need to be told what could have been done to prevent 3,000 people from losing their lives," said Rep. Curt Weldon (search), R-Pa.

Weldon drew attention to Able Danger by speaking about it on the House floor and publicly calling for the Sept. 11 commission to explain why the intelligence information wasn't detailed in its final report.

Some Able Danger analysts, including Army Reserve Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer (search) and Navy Capt. Scott Phillpott (search), claim that in October 2003, they told commission staffers of the presence of Al Qaeda operatives in the United States in 2000.

Condi in Middle of Able Danger ‘Cover Up’"

Weldon is now saying that the Pentagon cover up of able danger “will shake the country to its roots."

...

If the claims made by the Able Danger participants and Rep. Weldon are confirmed, former National Security Adviser Rice and other Bush Administration officials will face a barrage of questions. First would likely be an inquiry into why the administration unceremoniously axed the Able Danger project in May of 2001.

During an August 20th interview on C-Span’s Washington Journal, Able Danger member Lt. Col. Schaffer posed a question of his own:

"The American public should ask themselves: Why would the leadership of DoD shut down, terminate, a project which was aimed at targeting al-Qaeda offensively? ...

"Why would they shut that down, four months before 9/11? That’s the big question right now, we have to ask that. I don’t know the answer to that question because I know my side of the story, I know that when a 2 star general got in my face and said, “I’m a 2 star general and you are not. You are to stop your support of Able Danger.” That’s what I know personally. But the question has to be: Who told him to do that? ...

"And why did the rest of the project, I’m talking about Special Operations Command and the Army portion of this, why was that terminated?

"Those are the questions that need to be asked."

Three more assert Pentagon knew of 9/11 ringleader By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three more people associated with a secret U.S. military intelligence team have asserted that the program identified September 11 ringleader Mohammed Atta as an Al Qaeda suspect inside the United States more than a year before the 2001 attacks, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

The Pentagon said a three-week review had turned up no documents to back up the assertion, but did not rule out that such documents relating to the classified operation had been destroyed.

Navy Capt. Scott Phillpott and Army Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer last month came forward with statements that a secret intelligence program code-named "Able Danger" had identified Atta, the lead hijacker in the attacks that killed 3,000 people, in early 2000. Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Curt Weldon (news, bio, voting record), vice chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, also went public with the allegations.

Pat Downs, a senior policy analyst in the office of the undersecretary of defense for intelligence, told reporters that as part of the review, the Pentagon interviewed 80 people.

Downs said that three more people, as well as Phillpott and Shaffer, recalled the existence of an intelligence chart identifying Atta by name. Four of the five recalled a photo of Atta accompanying the chart, Downs said.

Pentagon officials declined to identify the three by name, but said they were an analyst with the military's Special Operations Command, an analyst with the Land Information Warfare Assessment Center and a contractor who supported the center.

Downs said all five were considered "credible people."

But officials said an exhaustive search of tens of thousands of documents and electronic files related to Able Danger failed to find the chart or other documents corroborating the identification of Atta. Phillpott has said Atta was identified by Able Danger by January or February of 2000.

"We have not discovered that chart," Downs said.

Rummy didn't pull the plug - Cheney "The Cobweb" did?
Early today I watched the 'Spector House' Able Danger hearings on CSPAN.

I watched closely, because at 8am, my cell was buzzing, a call from a friend. I had asked him to get some clarification on Shaffer's story that Rummy told 'em not to testify. The word I got from him was that contrary to popular knowledge, Rummy didn't pull the plug on the witnesses, it came from "Cobweb", which is just a little - OK, a lot higher up the chain.

Secret Service Codenames:

Cobweb: Vice President's office

How could the Pentagon silence an FBI witness?

topdog08's diary :: ::
This update was posted today:

So why "Cobweb's" involvement?

That's unknown, I can only speculate, although Tom Mcguire speculates that only the VP would wield power over both the Pentagon and FBI witnesses.

By the way, I have that "Cobweb" influence on very good source, so I trust it.

Yet as in show business the hearings will go on, they have to. There's too much attention to them now. But they'll go on for years.

The old Washington ploy - long drawn out hearings until another "heat cycle" in the MSM when everything else is buzzing then the hearings will close and the findings will be found on page 15b or somewhere.

25. Specter: Pentagon Drops Hearing Objection
Specter: Pentagon Drops Hearing Objection 7 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A Senate committee said Friday that the Pentagon has dropped its refusal to let five people with knowledge of a highly classified intelligence program testify about it publicly, but a Pentagon spokesman said it remained opposed to such testimony in an open hearing.

In a news release, Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the five will testify at an open hearing Oct. 5.

Asked about Specter's announcement, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said, "Our position with respect to this has not changed. Our concerns have not changed." He said the Pentagon has not agreed to permit the five to testify in public.

Whitman said the Pentagon has provided a great deal of information about the program, called "Able Danger," to the Intelligence and Armed Services committees, and will continue to do so.

Spokesmen for Specter and for the Judiciary Committee did not immediately return calls seeking comment on Whitman's remarks.

The five people Specter wants to testify in public have said they recall an intelligence chart that identified Sept. 11 leader Mohamed Atta as a terrorist inside the United States one year before the attacks on New York and Washington. But Pentagon officials who have investigated the matter say they have been unable to find the chart or evidence that it ever existed.
