And Honore's political campaign begins...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050911/ap_on_re_us/katrina_hurricane_general

<snip>With a can-do attitude and a cigar in hand, Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore arrived after Hurricane Katrina and directed troops to point weapons down in respect for a stunned and stranded population lacking food, electricity and safety.

Each morning, Honore (pronounced AHN'-ur-ay) boards a Blackhawk helicopter at Camp Shelby in Mississippi, 100 miles north of New Orleans, for a humanitarian mission as head of the military's Joint Task Force Katrina.

Honore was born at home 57 years ago during a hurricane, his mother and an uncle always told him. He grew up poor in Lakeland, La., northwest of Baton Rouge, with 11 siblings, once winning a 4-H contest with the family's lone dairy cow, Weasel.

His daughter and friends live in New Orleans. As a child, he spent two weeks at Charity Hospital, where Katrina's flood waters trapped doctors and patients, after he was hit in the head with a baseball bat.<snip>

2. I like this dude...
My opinion.

I just remember him inside New Orleans screaming at soldiers:

"Put those guns down. We're not in Iraq. These are Americans."

That pretty much won me over.

this guy is the real deal, and I have the sneaky suspicion he eats politicos for lunch... and general staff officers....

I know hard not to be a cynic but both my husband and I went, that man is the real deal... he served 20 in the USN, and I did 10, seven of which were technically army reserve. Trust me you can spot real officers... from the pencil geeks, he is the real deal... now boykin he would have peed his pants.

12. Thanks, I'll take that as an endorsement to the general's ....
....leadership abilities. As for integrity, he has a great opportunity to demonstrate that with the job he has to do. If he is the "real deal" as you have put it, he will be tested over and over and over by the Bushkyes because what is real to us is considered poison powder to them and they'll be all over him each time bucks the neo-con politico doctrine.

I listen to he today for the first time and I heard some reassuring statements and also he sounded very much like he knows what he is doing. Neo-con reporters and news people will be snipping at this man the more he accomplishes for the good of New Orleans evacuees and residences rather than for the corporate fascists and opportunistic developers that are flying over the devastated areas of New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama.

As for General Boykin, I guess he's still out there recruiting Modern Day Christian Soldiers who are armed and have standing orders to use lethal force to convert unbelievers and the tax payers are paying him to continue doing that. In fact, he might very well be in or around the Houston Astrodome doing that very thing right now at this moment if church is being held.

7. they were following him as he toured the city ...
He made some cops put their's down as well and you could tell they didn't like it. They followed his orders because ... he is so good at giving them. One's first inclination is to jump.

11. I don't know if he would consider politics or not, but he's sure the
kind of guy you're looking for if you want someone who's going to tell it like it is, and not give you any BS!

3. I like the guy too! He seems to know how to get things done and
he's not afraid to make a damn decision like the rest of the POLITICAL hacks! I can't remember the words or the question, but I saw him at a press briefing last week when some reporter said something and he glared at him and said "That's BS!" He reminds me a bit of Schwartzcoff, and I think we need more like that in charge of things!

taht they think they can make it all better by putting a large gruff Cajun face on it.
This administration is so smarmy I can almost hear the sentences coming out of their mouths.

14. From the Article
"On Sunday he appeared on both CBS' "Face the Nation" and on CNN's "Late Edition," where he defended giving food and water to people who are refusing to leave New Orleans.

"Right now, we want to make sure that we're taking care of the people that are alive, and that we are treating them with dignity and respect, and we're providing food and water for them," Honore told CNN."

He earned my respect and admiration right there. I don't really care what his politics are or what his future plans are. It sounds like he's the right man for this job and it's going to test him and all of of his skills. I pray he's up to the task.

17. He is the reason that they are finally picking up the dead.
No one likes to tell him no.

Along with him telling the troops to point their weapons downward and doing a good job organizing the search and rescue missions, he gets my respect.
