Was William Golding right re: Lord of the Flies? Man is a savage
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 12:12 PM by Mountainman
Lord of the Flies is a thought-provoking novel authored by William Golding in 1954. The book describes in detail the horrific exploits of a band of young children who make a striking transition from civilized to barbaric. Lord of the Flies commands a pessimistic outlook that seems to show that man is inherently tied to society, and without it, we would likely return to savagery.

It seems like NOLA is proving him right

1. I didn't get that from "Lord of the Flies".
What I got was evil triumphs over good much of the time, but that the evildoers are few in number, but they subjugate everyone under their ideology for a time.

6. A different take from my point of view.
A great book, but I disagree with your slant on it. The boys formed a "society". A sort of proto-fascist society of social darwinism where the "strong" devoured the weak.

As bad as things are in NO and elsewhere we are seeing, mostly, the outrages perpetrated by members of that savage society depicted by Golding. What we aren't seeing (enough of) are the many acts of heroism, nobility, generosity, compassion, that are being done by the members of the other society which far outnumber the more sensational and "newsworthy" bits that dominate the tube. (Not that they shouldn't be depicted.)

I find the antics of the politicians trying to cover their sorry asses far more disgusting and revealing than the acts of the predators.

And, the sights of poor people helping each other far more inspiring.
