In the next 72 hours....(Atlantic forecast graphic)
...these two developing storms may start bearing down on the East Coast. I think G-d is sick and tired of this administration.

1. If God really does feel that way, perhaps a discrete tornado
up Penn ave would do the job more efficiently.

Seriously, though... I hate the habit of looking for God's intentions in the suffering of innocent people.

It's just too damn sad...

4. I believe neither of those storms poses a threat to land
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 09:57 PM by theHandpuppet
According to weather.com But there is a third one about halfway between Africa and S. America that they definitely have their eye on.

6. This is a forecast graphic
That third storm you speak of is the one depicted in the north. The one to the south is currently a tropical wave that is currently showing signs of development. Upper air analysis is favorable for continued development.

I teach this stuff for a living.

10. Okay
The graphic as posted is too large for me to see without a lot of scrolling back and forth.

7. Yes, it's #3 that could be serious
http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html

The most significant threat in the tropics may be from a tropical wave that is spinning midway between Africa and the Leeward Islands, near 9N 36W. This system has gotten much better organized in just the past two hours, and will probably be classified as TD 15 by tomorrow. There is a moderate amount of deep convection near the center, but this is being disrupted some by wind shear. A large area of improving upper-level outflow on the north side and east sides exists, and Quikscat winds are already over 55 mph on the east side. The disturbance is far enough south that it will not get recurved out to sea by the mid-Atlantic trough. The early track models (below) show it moving west-northwest and threatening the Leeward Islands by Tuesday. Virtually all the the computer models forecast the shear over the system to lessen, and develop it into at least a tropical storm. The GFS continues to forecast that this will be a major hurricane. I believe that this will be at least a Category 1 hurricane by Tuesday, and might be trouble for the Leeward Islands.

9. Yes, this is the one to which I was referring
And I noticed the location was farther south than the first two, which led me to believe it wouldn't be veering off to the NE away from land.

The fact that it is quickly becoming more organized is very troubling.

8. You want to see something scary? - check this out
A very strong tropical wave is set to develop east of the Leeward Islands in the next day or so, maybe even as soon as later tonight. You can see it's already a vigorous looking system on satellite:

The scary part is, some of the models, including one that has been very accurate, bring this system to category 5 status next week just NE of the islands and heading west toward the US:

Let's hope this doesn't happen! :scared:

15. IMHO, Florida and/or the Gulf should start watching this one very closely.

12. I have been worried sick that we are going to take a beating this
summer. NOAA says this is going to be a record year with some record size storms.

Katrina may be only the first of several.

16. Hurricane season is just starting
Although that's the "traditional" season, they start a hell of a lot earlier now and last twice as long.

Can you say "Global Warming"? I knew you could.
