Security incidents in Iraq, Aug 17

BAGHDAD, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Wednesday, Aug. 17, as of 1200 GMT.

U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad.

Asterisk denotes new or updated item. * BAGHDAD - Three car bombs killed at least 43 people, including three police men, and wounded 88, including 10 police men, in a coordinated attack on a Baghdad bus station in the morning rush hour, an Interior Ministry source said.

Police and medics were among the dead, struck by the third bomb, between the bus station and the nearby Kindi hospital as victims of the earlier blasts were being taken there.

KIRKUK - Six Iraqi soldiers were killed on Wednesday when insurgents fired automatic weapons at their car in northern Iraq, police said.

Police spokesman Yadgar Mohammed said the men were killed near the town of Hawija as they headed to their military base in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

* TIKRIT - Five Iraqi police were killed in an ambush by gunmen between Hawija and al-Shirkat, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad.

* BAIJI - A truck driver was killed when U.S troops opened fire in Baiji, 180 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad. The U.S military said they were checking the report.

TAJI - An engineer and five guards were kidnapped while they were repairing an oil pipeline in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, oil ministry officials said. Police said the men were kidnapped on Tuesday and relatives had received messages threatening to kill them.

BAGHDAD - A U.S soldier was killed when his patrol was struck by a roadside bomb in southwest Baghdad early on Tuesday, the U.S military said in a statement.

MOSUL - One U.S soldier was killed by insurgents in the northern city of Mosul on Monday, a U.S military statement said. There were no further details on the attack.
