Yes, I guess I'd rather be tasered than shot but tasering will let lots of crimes happen with criminals escaping freely. Also, police get training to use these --there's no plan for public training. Plus, isn't this the same company the Giuliani's little friend Bernie Kerik started and made a fortune with? Oh and, surprise surprise, they're starting with Florida!

Taser pushes its stun guns for public
Taser International is offering its controversial stun guns for sale to the general public, raising concerns among police, legal experts and a human rights group.

The manufacturer of the stun guns cops carry on their belts is launching an aggressive marketing campaign to boost sales of the weapon to the public, a move police fear will put a dangerous and largely unregulated weapon on the streets.

The city chosen by Taser International executives to launch the new sales blitz: Miami, beginning Tuesday.

Sales of the weapon -- though banned in eight states -- are legal in Florida, where background checks on buyers are not required by law. Business is already brisk at local stores.

Law enforcement authorities worry that the so-called Taser, which can paralyze its victim temporarily, will get in the hands of criminals. (Gee...ya think?...)

ON EDIT:
Yep - Kerik "to step down" and also:

03/21/05
In a news release, Taser said Kerik was resigning "to focus on his consulting business." He will be replaced by former Montana Gov. Judy Martz.

The day before Kerik quit, it was reported that he had made $6.2 million by exercising stock options he obtained as a board member of Taser, which has sold stun guns to the Homeland Security Department and is seeking more contracts.

Taser itself is under federal and state scrutiny over the safety of its stun guns and accounting issues. The Securities and Exchange Commission is also conducting an informal probe into Taser's safety claims. The company maintains that the guns are safe.

So somebody please tell me why they're starting to sell them to the public NOW?

9. Oh well then. Let's all get the Advanced Taser with LASER!
Note the use of the word "combatants"

Advanced Taser with Laser
Features:
Model 44001 ADVANCED TASER M18-L with integrated laser sight, and 4 Air Cartridges.

Product Description
The new Advanced Taser M-18 series has almost 100% effectiveness rating. It combines the injury reducing benefits of traditional stun technology with a quantum leap in stopping power via new Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) technology. In police studies, the new Advanced Taser has a higher instant incapacitation rate than a 9mm hand gun. The Advanced Taser shoots out 2 darts attached to 15 feet of wire. 50,000 volts travels over the wires and over-rides the central nervous system providing incredible takedown power. NEW Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) Technology There are two catagories of energy weapons: Stun weapons and EMD weapons. STUN WEAPONS: Traditional stun technology weapons operate in a 7-14 Watt range and interfere with the communication signals within the nervous system of the target. These stun systems primarily effect the sensory nervous system. EMD WEAPONS: EMD weapons use a more powerful 18 to 26 Watt electrical signal to completely override the central nervous system and directly control the skeletal muscles. This EMD effect causes an uncontrollable contraction of the muscle tissue, allowing the M-Series to physically debilitate a target regardless of pain tolerance or mental focus. The ADVANCED TASER M-Series are EMD weapons -- specifically designed to stop even the most elite, aggressive, focused combatants. Rather than simply interfering with communication between the brain and muscles, the ADVANCED TASER EMD systems directly tell the muscles what to do: contract until the target is in the fetal position on the ground. The ADVANCED TASER provides for maximum safety for both the officer and the subject by bringing dangerous situations quickly under control before force escalates to lethal levels.

5. Oh Heavens, You Must Be Mistaken!
These are just tools, tools to defend us from rapists and muggers! Not be used against us! Heavens!

(Meanwhile, police are preparing to test out--on you and your loved ones--a microwave gun for "crowd control." Because, you know, cops need to be able to zap the crap outta hundreds of people all the time.

...Or maybe they know something we don't.)

Scientists worried by riot control ray gun
20 Jul 2005 18:00:10 GMT

Source: Reuters

LONDON, July 20 (Reuters) - Scientists are questioning the safety of a Star Wars-style riot control ray gun due to be deployed in Iraq next year.

The Active Denial System weapon, classified as "less lethal" by the Pentagon, fires a 95-gigahertz microwave beam at rioters to cause heating and intolerable pain in less than five seconds.

The idea is people caught in the beam will rapidly try to move out of it and therefore break up the crowd.

But New Scientist magazine reported on Wednesday that during tests carried out at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, participants playing the part of rioters were told to remove glasses and contact lenses to protect their eyes.

12. This is just nuts.
"In another test they were also told to remove metal objects like coins from their clothing to avoid local hot spots developing on their skin." How about earrings, bracelets, rings, or necklaces? What about people who have pins in place from medical procedures? Would they be affected?

17. Oops. Sorry. But you edited the best part. Here 'tis...
The Active Denial System weapon, classified as "less lethal" by the Pentagon, fires a 95-gigahertz microwave beam at rioters to cause heating and intolerable pain in less than five seconds.

(snip)
"What happens if someone in a crowd is unable for whatever reason to move away from the beam," asked Neil Davison, coordinator of the non-lethal weapons research project at Britain's Bradford University.

"How do you ensure that the dose doesn't cross the threshold for permanent damage? Does the weapon cut out to prevent overexposure?," he added.

The magazine said a vehicle-mounted version of the weapon named Sheriff was scheduled for service in Iraq in 2006 and that U.S. Marines and police were both working on portable versions.

10. Taser, Oozies
at your local WalMart store. I knew as soon as the repukes came back on board that all the gun laws would go out the window. Hell the NRA ran the government during the 80's. Can you just see another Columbine now with automatic machine guns and tasers. This should get interesting.

as they set aside the defense bill!

Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., brushed aside an offer by Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to set a 7 p.m. Thursday deadline for passage of the defense bill (S 1042). Instead, he said it was imperative that the Senate this week pass legislation that would shield gunmakers from liability lawsuits (S 397).
