Who is Brer Rabbit, who is Brer Fox?
Just for fun, do y'all remember Brer Rabbit and the briar patch?

Here's the story, in a nutshell.

Read it through, because I have a question at the end. :-)

****************************************************************

One day Brer Fox thought that Brer Rabbit had been acting too upity lately, and he thought he was the boss of the whole gang. So Brer Fox thought of a way to set a trap for Brer Rabbit, and then he hid himself in the bushes.

Well, to make a long story short, the trap worked, and Brer Rabbit was caught.

Brer Fox walked out from behind the bushes and strolled over to Brer Rabbit, looking as innocent as a mockingbird.

"Howdy, Brer Rabbit," said Brer Fox. "You look sort of stuck up this morning." And he rolled on the ground and laughed and laughed until he couldn't laugh anymore.

By and by he said, "Well, I expect I got you this time, Brer Rabbit. Maybe I don't, but I expect I do. You've been around here sassing me a mighty long time, but now it's the end."

"You're always getting into something that's none of your business," Brer Fox continued. "You just jammed yourself into a trap, and there you'll stay until I fix up a brushpile and fire it up, cause I'm going to barbecue you today, for sure." said Brer Fox.

Then Brer Rabbit started talking mighty humble.

"I don't care what you do with me, Brer Fox," says he, "Just so you don't fling me in that briar patch. Roast me, hang me just as high as you like, drown me just as deep as you please, Brer Fox," said Brer Rabbit, "But PLEASE don't fling me in that briar patch."

Of course, Brer Fox wanted to get Brer Rabbit as bad as he could, so he caught him by the behind legs and slung him right in the middle of the briar patch. There was a considerable flutter when Brer Rabbit struck the bushes, and Brer Fox hung around to see what was going to happen.

By and by he heard someone call his name, and way up on the hill he saw Brer Rabbit sitting cross-legged on a old log, combing the thorns out of his hair with a chip. Then Brer Fox knew he had been tricked.

Brer Rabbit hollered out with alaugh, "Born and bred in the briar patch. I was born and bred in the briar patch!" And with that he skipped out just as lively as a cricket in the embers of a fire.

****************************************************************

Now remember, this is just for fun, so nobody get their undies in a bunch, ok?

I've heard this story used as a comparrison against Rove and Dean. Where Rove is Brer Rabbit, and is afraid of the Dean campaign, so he says "Go Dean, give us Dean."

http://www.sf.indymedia.org/news/2003/07/1624957.php

Just like Brer Rabbit asked Fox to roast, hang or drown him.

So, here is my question.

Do you think Rove wants a Dean candidacy, or not? If so, what-or who-is Rove's briar patch?

Also, can you interpret this story in such a way as to make Dean = Brer Rabbit?

Best answer wins - absolutely nothing, sorry. :eyes:

3. An old fan of that story......and Joel Chandler Harris....yes...we need to
ask ourselves ALWAYS in the course of American History.......who is B'rer Rabbit.....and who is B'rer Fox....and Who is the Tar Baby.......and the Characters Change....and the Racial Colors change (as to the "tar baby") but he saw an American Parable....that stays with us all this time......

And, just like "Grimms Fairy Tale" for those of a generation who grew up reading them......our history has "strange bedfellows." It does.....:-( The best thing is that many of us can go back to these "writers" and get our "Center Place" renewed.....and it gives us comfort that George Bush and "WE" are just a "BLIP IN TIME."

Yeah......a weird post.....if anyone even bothers to read it........in our "hurried times" here on DU and elsewhere.

Peace!

4. Yeah, Its A Weird Post-- LOL!
but it's an even weirder world!

I think Rove sees the nature of Dean's campaign as dangerous. Rove may know how to manipulate the press, and to nail down corporate sponsors, but how does that work against a grass roots organization that is INet-powered, and 98.9% free of the Network TV news feed?

Oh yeah, give us Dean, 'cause the Republican tactics were born and raised in the top down, media driven, corporate lapdog world of the DLC briar patch.

And please, Brer Voter, dont throw poor Brer Bush in the briar patch!

8. Yes.....I see what you say...would you believe? Marc Shields on PBS
mentioned "Bre'r Rabbit.." My hubbie thought I'd gone psycho on him...because I went off on along thing to him after your post on DU....about Joel Chandler Harris and how great a post you had considering that I grew up in the Southern US and had B'rer Rabbit read to me as a child....and he grew up in NY State and never heard of it..and Mark Shields mentions B'rer Rabbit.....(it didn't make sense what he said enough to post his comment) BUT that there's a BIG B'RER RABBIT MEME going on out there in our thoughts and everyone's thinking the same thing.....and hubby thought I was psychic....But, he's a good friend....and so I knew he thought it was interesting...that we are all thinking this at the same time.....

BUT.....WHY ARE WE ALL THINKING THIS AT THE SAME TIME.........

Because those of us who "SEE IT" are grounded in the roots of AMERICAN LITERATURE.....and we know what it means. :-)'s and .....yes..another wierd post.....but maybe you get it?

Now if I could just get our poster "DemBones" on this thread we would have THREE of us! "DemBones" spent some time growing up with Harris....I think.......

:-)'s to you for Harris's mention........

Peace!
