A commentary segment on my local news?!?!?!?!
Unbelievable but the local CBS affiliate here in Omaha has a segment where the guy gives his opinion on something and then they play voice mails from people who called in on the last subject. Tonight was military recruiters access to highschools. Do I have to tell you which side he was on? (although his basic point that they should have as much access as colleges is probably a good one). Last night's topic was Michael Jackson moving to Berlin. Back to my point though - when I watch my local news, I want local events, maybe world events very briefly, weather and sports, not wanna-be Bill O'Reilly.

1. Its been going on for a year now.
Channel 3 is a perennial last place station, it has been a very long time since they've been on top. They're doing whatever they can to carve out a niche. Remember 'no violent video' from a few years ago, aka Goody 2 shoes news. I mean come on these guys lost all credibility years ago.

I guess I don't care that he's doing to commentaries. I'm more concerned that the owners of Channel 3 are a bunch of RW fundies.

2. That sounds kind of like what Sinclair Broadcast Group airs

My local CBS affiliate is owned by Sinclair and they lost my viewership after the Swiftboat fiasco last year. They air (or at least did air, I haven't watched them in months) a daily right-wing commentary during the local "news" that comes from the corporate office and is presented by an idiot named Mark Hyman. He regularly trashes liberals and various left-leaning groups. For many months I just rolled my eyes at it, but it reached a whole new level of freeperness during the election season last year.

4. "I'm Mark Hyman and that's The Point"
Most annoying about the smug used-to-do-the-sports approach of Hyman's verbal fartings is THEY DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE! For the dittohead crowd, maybe they just filter in and provide farting points-- but anyone trying to follow Hyman's train of thought will end up in a dark tunnel with no light at the end.

Unwatchable.

3. There were editorials on WCCO (CBS affiliate in Minneapolis) in
the 1960s, but they were not partisan, more common sense statements about local issues.

6. WCCO in the '60s?
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 01:02 AM by robertarctor
Was that when Skip Loescher was on?

As for Hyman, thank dog our local CBS affiliate (KOVR 13 in Sacramento) got bought by Viacom. When Sinclair owned it, we had to sit through that assclown's ramblings every newscast. Glad he's gone.

7. I think so, but the editorial commentator was
named George Rice. He had a bit of an Andy Rooney air.
