Political correctness
I generally do not allow my grandbaby to watch television--and opt for tapes, but Barney was on and she saw it so I let her watch.
Now mind you, we watch all the old pre-taped Barney's.
I always like the lessons that Barney teaches of sharing and being polite, etc, and I have always applauded the racial diversity of the show. There has usually been a White, Hispanic, Asian, and a Black child playing together. This was always one of my favorite lessons that Barney got across in a subtle way.
Anyway...I turn it on today and there are only 3 children.
Two blonde/blue-eyed kids and one child that appears to be racially mixed that is playing with a white baby doll.
When did this happen? I guess next time I catch it I will see three white kids.
So much for teaching children to love everyone regardless of race.

1. Maybe it has to do with PBS' current leadership.
Tomlinson has been trying to make PBS have more conservative views.

2. White supremacy is raising it's ugly head again in our country
with very subtle underminings.
I know that my generation had alot of prejudice.
However, my kids generation is very comfortably integrated racially.
I had high hopes that my granddaughter's generation would be the one that finally healed the divide.
However, this doesn't look promising.

5. Yeah, thats pretty sad
that a show known for diversity is changing. The Republicans are only moving America backwards, not forward.

3. I thought that there were five or six kids at a time
at least, that's how it was in the early nineties, when I babysat a kid who loved that show.

4. That's one thing about Sesame Street
I watched it every day every time it came on when I was young enough to appreciate it. I never noticed that there were whites and Latinos/Latinas. They were just people. And I'd occasionally tune into Villa Allegre, entirely in Spanish, and be able to follow it somewhat.

Little kids don't notice when they're there but they do notice when they're not.

Take cartoons. I remember as a seven year old asking the question: How come there aren't any girls?

7. Excellent observation.
I agree. Diversity doesn't phase children, but they will notice a lack of it. A couple of years ago I went through a book on the presidents with my son. Thoroughly white washed for consumption by the American conscience if you'll pardon the pun, but it gave names and dates. At any rate, when we finished the book my son looked up and said, "Okay, now let's go through the lady president book." Bless his heart!

6. If you think that is bad take a look at the history books
available for children. Even those that are supposed to address "euro-centric bias" fail miserably. The propaganda we pour into our children's heads is insidious and pervasive. As you point out, it is everywhere if you bother to pay attention.

8. My son usually watches this show each morning.
I just called my wife and she said there was two white children, one black child and one hispanic child on the show this morning. Two girls two boys.

Sometimes the cast are different during the week, they have two sets they are usuing right now, usually two white children and two other children of different races. They also recently had a handicapped child who was missing a hand.

My wife actually thought they were doing a better job of diversity now then early on when the show first started which we have some old garage sale tapes off.

9. Hmmm
I just watched it and there were 3 kids, lol. 2 girls and 1 boy.
I guess maybe she watched a different one.
As I stated, I don't normally watch the new ones, but I do know the older ones (done in Allen, TX) did have a racially diverse group of kids.
