Need photos of empty Wal-Marts in your towns
I am working on the new Wal-Mart documentary and seeking still or moving images of empty Wal-Mart stores.

"...There's a section of the film we need photos and video for -- a montage of all the empty and abandoned Wal-Marts. There are over 300 Wal-Mart's for sale across the country..many have been on the market for years. One horribly ironic thing about the Wal-Mart effect is how destructive they are to communities when they first arrive, but how they are even *more* destructive when they eventually leave..."

You can help in two ways:

1. If there is one in your town, post address in this thread.

2. Send my your contact me by PM if you can provide film or digital documentation. I will forward to the producers.

Thanks for your assistance, please keep this post kicked.

3. What about stores that closed so a bigger one could open?
I've seen some of those around. Stores that close so a Super Walmart can open up on the outskirts of a town, leaving the old store and as the anchor tenant eventually the rest of the stores around it in bad shape.

5. One of those in my home town.
Unfortunately, I don't live there now. Funny thing was, when walmart moved, opening a supercenter out on the highway, it triggered an economic downturn in town. After walmart had promised the city the moon to cooperate with the move.

Bastards.

16. Yes, those too
All closed stores, with a note if they were superceeded by a larger store/supercenter.

I don't know of any Wal-Marts, though.
Thankfully, there are none near me.

But --- if you find there is one that's been closed in the Twin Cities, let me know and I'll help get some photos or video for you.

6. I can get you a photo of an empty Cubs Food Store
that went out of business because of Wally World. Ever consider taking that tack, stores put out of business by Wally World?

7. Old one closed to make room for a new one
not far from my parents' house. Formerly on Wesley Chapel Rd. in Decatur, GA. The building is an emply shell. The exact former address is gone from the electronic phone pages.

8. I'm pretty sure there's one in Charleston, IL
The type that closed so a Super Wal-Mart could open at the edge of town. I don't live there anymore, but there are other DUers living in that area that might be able to help. Try posting this in the Illinois forum. :)

9. There's is one near me that closed.
But it just moved to a new location up the road. The old one is on Highway 5 in Woodstock, Georgia.

11. Unfortunately, the one near me
is an inner city Walmart, and it's doing just peachy.

However, I did notice that last Xmas shopping season, the parking lot was half empty, so I know they're not doing as well as they want to.

13. No empty Wal-Marts near me
There is a former Wal-Mart that is now an antique mall. The Wal-Mart nearest my home was a new-build about 5 years ago and is already looking kind of ragged, but does a good business. (The city bus line that goes through the area has WALMART in its name!) The next-closest Wal-Mart went from a small store to a Supercenter by adding on to the existing building.

Here in Texas, though, there are a lot of empty KMart buildings since they've pulled out of the state.

14. Unfortunately...
I live in Redneck Central and the two SuperCenters (five miles apart) and the Sam's Club (under construction)are doing marvelous. I'd blame it on ignorance, but even if the people here knew they were selling their country at 'always low prices' many of would still go there to try and stretch dollars. Personally, I don't remember the last time I was there. I quit going even before I learned about all the imports because I can't stand fighting the herds.

15. We had one until just recently
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 12:04 PM by SiouxJ
it sat empty for about 2 years. Right now a furniture store is renovating it. I doubt they'll make it in such a big space. Wal-mart closed this smaller store in order to open two super-wal-marts nearby. I live in a relatively small town too. They're putting in yet another super-wal-mart about 15 minutes away as well. We'll have 3 Super Wal-marts in an area that has a population of about 30,000. I haven't shopped there in many years and I see "Wal-mart Sucks" bumper stickers all over the place. I just can't believe they are doing so well here, but they are.

Good luck with your project. Until about a week ago, I could have participated.

17. The one that was here
sat empty for about a year, then a farm supply business moved into the building. Up the road about thirty miles, was an empty ugly mal-wart, I don't go up there very often, but last fall we went past and the paint was fading, there was grass growing up in the parking lot, just perfect for what you want. It's in Maryville Missouri, which is a college town so there maybe someone lurking on here that can supply a photo.
The supercenter they opened that closed the one in town, is not doing that well, it used to be that finding a parking spot there was hard, now just about anytime the lot is half full if that.

18. My company bought an old WalMart building
and turned it into office and warehouse space for our company. WalMart opened a new Super WalMart down the road from it.
