PANIC in the DU Panic Room
I've been following that Yahoo Group, and some of those people are getting realy FRANTIC, with the constant on & off of this DU Board. ME too! I'm as addicted as any here, and I need a couple dozen hits a day (No, REALLY!).

But my thoughts are this: It's a major 3 day holiday, and the administrators may have personal/family commitments. Grin & bear it for another day, without going into convulsions and dumping on them. Let them bring this Board back to life at their own pace. Read a fucking book ferchrissakes! Tomorrow will come.

11. Here's the URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DUPanicRoom/. I don't recall the signon procedure any more, but it shouldn't be much of a problem. I rarely check it directly, but I took the option of having all the messages mirrored to my own email address. Here's the pitch: "The DU Panic Room is a forum for the members of the Democratic Underground to meet in, should the Democratic Underground web site, for whatever reason, not function."

It's not quite as bad as I described, and those upset people are our own DU buddies. For emergencies such as this, it'll be a LIFESAVER. It's certainly a lot better than suffering alone.

Your email address will be on display to whoever else signs onto that group. For a few here, that might be a problem.

21. Just a little history on the "Panic Room".
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 04:32 AM by anarchy1999
The DU Panic Room was started up long ago when DU actually went down for several days. If I am not mistaken the group was started and is moderated by one of DU's respected members, BeHereNow.

It serves us well for down times, the likes of which have not been seen since it was started.

And yes, just imagine if you will, DU gone. We (or at least some of us) decided long ago we needed to establish other means of contact, just to be safe.

So for those of you mocking our "Panic Room" may you never have to live through DU being down for days.

Also as CatchaWave mentions in #16, it saved him/her a call to a computer geek or just throwing one's system out the window and getting a new one believing it was their computer rather than problems with DU.

4. Read Skinner's statement in the Lobby
One of the servers is on the fritz. He said they are having trouble contacting the ISP since it's a Holiday. Likely they might not be able to deal with it until tomorrow. Just a technical inconvenience, no big conspiracy.

6. Per the posted update they're having trouble getting hold of the ISP
to restart the problem server. Looks like the ISP took the holday off, not the admins.

Sounds like everyone is bouncing off the walls (and possibly a little obsessive?).

10. hey that's not panic
it's frustration. I posted there with mine. Myself and i suppose others couldn't even get to the "announcement" on the page explaining to use a different link, so we were stuck in the down server (?) trying to see what was going on.

it's frustrating to see traffic, messages, operations as usual (or appearing as usual) to other members, while some of us were waiting 1/2 hour at a time for a thread or post to load. IF it did.

even after using the new address in 'announcement' it would still lock up sporadically.

if you want to see panic, imagine if no-one, not a single member of DU could get to the board ...which doesn't appear to be the case since there were maybe only a dozen if that messages here that i saw questioning the slowdown.

19. Websites go down every now and then
It's nothing new. Websites exist on computers (the servers) and even computers runnig some form of Unix can act up every now and then. I've seen it happen on dozens of websites and it's nothing worth worrying about.

14. It works very nicely with the alternative sign on link
The direct link hangs or stutters but the alternative signon link breezes right through.

13. There are other political boards like Thom Hartmann, Mike Malloy, Randi
Rhodes, Al Franken, et al.

I take the book reading advice... I gotta finish these Lakoff books before class starts this week. :)

16. Oh for heaven's sake !
The Panic Room saved me $2000 today because I thought it was my computer and was about ready to throw her in the lake...I'm very techie challenged you see :P

It was very helpful in posting the info for the alternative DU link, which allowed me to at least post Skinner's announcements.

20. I finally started the George Lakoff book
"Don't Think of an Elephant." Before, I was too busy dividing my time between DU and reading Robin Lakoff's book, "The Language War." ... and other stuff, ;)
