'this ain't a Dee Mocracy, this is a Ree Public', bla bla bla Shut TFU
i don't even know what the fucking point of this worn out republican bromide is, but they say it all the fucking time like most folks say howdy.

i think in their tiny little heads they like to say it because they think republic means republicans and democracy means democrats.

i think the phrase is pointless, much like 'we're fightin' em' over there so's we don't have ta fight em' over hyeer'.

i actually got into this debate live and in person with a former buddy who went over to the dark side. but after a few minutes i gave up and said whatever and he never did make his point.

1. A republic is a representative democracy.
Just tell em that.

It won't shut them up, but then, nothing will.

2. Cuba is a republic too. Formal name: Republic of Cuba
Edited on Tue May-24-05 08:39 AM by Justitia
So is China.

All "republic" means is that we don't have kings (inherited monarchy).
But they are too stupid and fixated on talking points ad nauseum to actually use a dictionary.

And about the "troops" talking point...

I don't like reducing our troops to sitting ducks in a shooting gallery.

Are we just using them for freaking bait?????

See what their smartass answer for that is.

8. The Re-pube-lick of Jeff Gannon is
located in the press room of the Bush White House, as the Republicans intimately know.

The Quran isn't the only thing being flushed here.

3. It's a Republic when it's convenient for them.
I first started hearing that from Republicans during the 2000 election. It didn't matter that Gore got 500,000 more votes than Bush, because "this is a Republic, not a Democracy". A Republic is supposed to be more respectful of the minority's rights (That's their argument for the electoral college). With the senate filibuster, however, we suddenly became a democracy, and the majority was supposed to have complete control.

6. We're a Constitutional Republic.
We have both pure democracy and republican based government intertwined within our government to provide minority parties some rights and representation. It also provides THE foundation of the Constitution's checks and balances.

Do they know that during the Revolution the churches (mostly) opposed republican government?

10. It Actually Works Against Them.
But of the people who claim to speak for us are too lazy or ignorant to point it out. The reason we are a Republic is to protect the rights of the minority.

11. I think it's a John Birch Society thing
Back in the 60's, there used to be bumper stickers around saying, "This is a republic, not a democracy. Let's keep it that way."

I never did find out what they had against demoncracy, though.

14. In a Republic there are Big wigs and Little wigs
In a Democracy everyone is the same. We have a Democratic Republic so "the People" elect their own Big wig to represent them. In some Republics the other Big wigs chose the next Big Wigs and the people just endure. America is getting close to that point.

18. What's all the "Democracy" that's supposed to be breaking out like hives..
Edited on Tue May-24-05 06:20 PM by KrazyKat
all over the flippin' world under BushCo? Maybe they should be spreading "Republicanism" throughout the Middle East.

Oh yeah, freepers, BTW -- a fuckin' MONARCHY is also a Republic! But wait, that's sort of what we've got now, a goddamn monarchy. :puke:

In an overly simplistic nutshell, when speaking of the USA, republic is the "what," and democracy is the "how."

Domocracy, that is, if you're not figuring in rigged elections, disenfranchised voters, phony recalls and special prosecutors, etc. :nuke:
