Republican tactic
Knowing that most of minority groups are democrats, republicans are using new tactics. When Bush nominated Candi to be secretary of state and gonzalez to be athorney general, he did not do it, because he thinks they are the best candidates, nor did he do it, because he respects minorities. He did it to win some minorities to the reps party. People should not support Bush just because he did that. Minority groups gotta understand that both candi and gonzalez are puppets in the hands of the reps! For example just because I am Jewish I will not support "every" Jewish candidate, even in the dems party. I have to look at the record. So should other minorities!

If you want to rise to the top of the Repubican pantheon, just be a black/asian/native american/latino woman with politics to the right of Attila.

5. he doesn't actually do this to win minorities
yes, banana republicans would be thrilled if they could get 13% of the black vote instead of 8%, or whatever, but in truth, they're not really after that sliver of a minority that they can shave off.

what's really invaluable to them is that thin veneer of respectability, the put-on that they're not racist, that they're not sexist, that they actually care about everyone in all shapes and colors.

by pretenting to court blacks, they prevent the loss a whole lot of whites who don't want to be associated with explicitly racist. white republicans love being able to claim that there are blacks in the cabinet and in the audience behind bush, and so on.

it lets them support racist policies and still tell themselves that they're not being racist.

6. Close, but not quite it. I have thought for years that the whole
reason was to give an excuse for otherwise unaccountable results in the voting booth.

"Why, they voted republican because they saw we have Condi and Gonzales!"

It's a cover for vote fraud, nothing more. If they only way they could get the vote numbers was to have 15% of the black vote, they needed to explain HOW they got that 15%. If they claim they got 45% of hispanic catholics, they trot out Gonzales as their pseudo-Judas goat -- he didn't really pull votes for them, but because of Diebold and ES&S we can't prove otherwise, and it makes a plausible excuse.

7. doesn't really appear to be cynical pandering

gonzales and condi are both longtime simpering syncophantic members of the bushco inner circle whose quailifications coincidentally matched the offices to which the were appointed.

these jobs were thier reward for being good soldiers in the junta.
