He won against Ron Kirk by a landslide in Dallas - Ron Kirk being one of the most popular mayors ever with a war chest double the size of Cornyn's and Cornyn being a complete nobody unable to speak in public and of questionable intelligence and with a very questionable record of public service. Sounds like . . .

Oh and oddly the first widespread use of black box voting that year. . .
