U.S. confirms Venezuela´s request for Posada´s extradition

WASHINGTON (PL) – The United States government on Saturday confirmed the Venezuelan government´s request for extradition of the terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, who this past April asked for political asylum from George W. Bush´s government.

Richard Boucher, State Department spokesman, commented that it is not common practice to comment on extradition matters, but added that "since the Venezuelan government had made the announcement," he had "no reason to disbelieve that," and that "the gentleman’s situation" would be handled according to normal procedures.

Boucher himself had previously said that he had " no confirmation" of the request by Caracas, in spite of the announcement made by the Venezuelan embassy in Washington.

Bernardo Alvarez, Venezuelan ambassador in this capital, confirmed the delivery to US authorities of the formal request for preventative detention and subsequent deportation of the terrorist.
"What has been done today is the first step. We have an extradition treaty signed in 1922 which, in its Article 11, provides for the attention to these requests regarding individuals that have committed crimes in the country and have escaped," the diplomat stated.
