Who do you regard as a 'leader'
NO NO NO ... this is NOT a Prez08 thing.

Many have said that we, as a country, lack a leader. That, by the way, is a completely non partisan statement.

A leader would be an MLK. A Fidel Castro. An FDR, a Churchill, Hitler, even.

Who in our country now, without respect to political affilliation (or even occupation - it could be a business person or an activist, a general or admiral or university president). Anyone from any walk of life.

Who do **you** regard as a leader. It doesn't have to be *your* leader. It could even be someone you dislike intensely.

4. She's certainly a favorite of involved lefties
But my question was about a leader for the broader population. I dare say a lot of folks on the right dislike her to the same degree you like her.

10. alright then - how about Nelson Mandela?

Aren't to many "world leaders" on the stage right now, mostly
only partisan leaders and nameless party functionaries (think
China, Japan, Australia).

I nominated my favorite partisan leader, Boxer. I suppose that
Tony Blair fits that too. But the days of Churchill and Haile
Selassie and FDR are over for the moment.

5. I am my own leader
Leadership is for patriarchs. I am a sovereign free citizen of the
world, and i make my own choices, follow my own heart and trust in
divine providence.

Barbara Boxer is a warrior soul, as are so many others, but they are
not my leaders, just fellow warriors in a world of free citizens who
have liberty and equality as root values in life.

7. Well, Cheney and Rove seem to be the major puppetstring
pullers -- but leadership behind the scenes isn't quite all its cracked up to be. I'm not sure that there is a valid leadership of any single person. Neocons, as a group, would have to be the answer. I think that a handful of Fundie notables might be considered leaders by a strong group, i.e., Dobson, Falwell, and Robertson.

My leader? Well, I always take notice when Lou Dobbs speaks; Sen. Ted Kennedy always makes me pay attention, and I love Barbara Boxer to death - haven't found fault with her yet.

8. An excellent point ...... and those guys .... ?
They're controllers ... but hardly inspiring leaders.

Think of MLK. Think of RFK. FDR. **They** were leaders. People would follow them to Hell and back. The, literally, inspired people to action.

I can't think of one person is such a person ... we just don't yet know the name.

9. Subcomandante Marcos and Hugo Chavez seem to be both
outspoken and effective leaders.

On the domestic front, Dennis Kucinich, John Conyers, Barbara Boxer. These folks tell it like it is and follow it up to the best of their ability.

IMO, in order to be a good leader, a person must always consider the wishes and the genuine best interests of the people that s/he represents. Unless a person has this primary quality, they are not really a leader, but an egomaniacal charlatan, an "Elmer Gantry".

That is why there are no republican leaders. Just corporate "yes" men and women.

12. Good one!
But I think God cares also about the underclass. Any leader worthy of the term should care about them too.
