Actually, I have heard fundies who proudly proclaim that "the Bible is the first source to recognize that the earth was round" (which is bullshit of course). The Bible recognizes a round earth, but uses the model laid out by Aristotle that has a geocentric universe.

14. These people seem confused about the words "fact" and "theory".

Of course Darwin's theory of evolution is "only a theory". But it is a theory about the fact of evolution. I am never sure what these "creationists" are on about. Are they saying that evolution is a fact and creationism is a better theory than Darwin's to explain the fact of evolution? Or are they saying that evolution never happened. In which case they are not disputing a theory, but denying a fact.

... which has specialized meaning within science. The term "theory" in science means some idea has scientific merit (because it has undergone scrutiny, examination of the evidence and reproducible experimentation), but that it can be subject to revision if new evidence appears.

The starting point to the scientific examination of an idea is a hypothesis, a "what-if." That's what the fundies actually mean when they use the term, "theory."

Whether they are using "theory" in that sense because their understanding of science is miniscule, or because they intend to corrupt the scientific meaning of the word in the public mind isn't important--they're still using the term incorrectly.

Funny thing, though--they still seem to believe in Social Darwinism, a political idea discredited as science decades ago.... :)
