HELP SAVE THESE DOGS!
Please pass this on to anyone you know in the North East who has been contemplating getting a dog.

Thanks.

Save the Greys
Posted by P.G. Gandy

From Boston Craigslist:

The greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they would discontinue greyhound racing. Unfortunately - and heartbreakingly - they've also decided that rescuers have only two weeks to get the dogs out, and any dogs remaining at the track on May 14th will be euthanized. This is a monumental task because there are at least 500 dogs currently at the track. These are all young, healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who would make great family pets.

We've committed to saving as many dogs as we possibly can in the next two weeks.

How can you help?

1. Contact Tony Stewart

Seriously. He loves greyhounds. He'd probably help.

[email protected] (that's his mom)

edited to add:

he's heavily involved in Greyrescue.

The other charities that Stewart’s Foundation supports include organizations in the protection of animals, the Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Indiana Special Olympics, Greyrescue (Greyhound Rescue Organization) and the Charlotte (N.C.) Metropolitan Zoo.

2. This is part-fact, part-hoax
The track is closing and all the dogs do need homes; however, the dogs remaining after May 14th are NOT going to be euthanized. I believe there is further information on snopes

5. We've adopted 3 Greyhounds off the track
and helped place more when we were on the Board of Directors in Louisville. They are lovely, wonderful pets. We've been waiting to go for another one until we have our fencing in better shape here (you MUST have an appropriate fence!), but may go ahead and contact these folks. The only placement org we've been able to find here in Calif. is just ridiculous as far as their stipulations with no exceptions.
The only problem with adopting right off the track, is that no one has had a chance to evaluate the dogs. There are some that are NOT pet quality (such as, cannot be housebroken, health problems, etc), or they can't be placed in families with cats, etc. We saw a number of dogs in Louisville that fell in this catagory, and it was heartbreaking. We'd either have to go rescue them from the pound or other bad circumstances because people couldn't deal with them, or people would already have become attached, and then find out they were looking at enormous vet bills. There was a woman in Louisville that just drove us crazy, because she would go down to Florida, pick up a truckload of dogs that the owners thought were euthanized, then bring them back and hand them out to anyone who would take one, without screening the people or the dogs. If you know anything at all about Sighthounds, you know you just can't do that.
Not all racing people are these horrible individuals. All 3 of our dogs came from a racing kennel in Indiana, that LOVED their dogs. They always did their best to place them in good homes after they were retired, and could give you detailed info on their individual personalities.
