The Church of NBC
Tonight, "The Hand of God"

They sure are drifting to more God/religion based programming.

Trying to suck up fundie ratings?

1. I Think They Lost Some Fundie Viewers
When the first episode of Revelations aired, and they didn't show the
"Rapture".

2. I haven't actually seen any of the segments...
...are they looking at religion with a critical eye, reporting on its impact on American society and the American political process with a neutral dispassionate presentation of facts (OK, I know that's not true) or do they have RIGHT WING fundies spouting their own special brand of religion?

I guess what I'm asking is how and what are they presenting.

4. Dunno, fundies have made me avoid most religion flavored media
How ironic that these people are doing more to push people away from God than to bring them into the fold.

I have my own beliefs that I keep in my heart. It has little to do with God's Army. Sometimes I find myself making critical comments about the church and find myself apologizing to MY Jesus. "Oops, sorry man, wasn't talking about you. You know I mean that "other" Jesus..."

3. Roughly 50% of Americans are religious. That is a fact. You cannot
expect the networks to ignore that much of their viewers. Especially when we news junkies on the left have turned to the internet.

9. Exactly. But Christian is the bigger group. And many, many Muslims
or Hindus can now get the local TV program from whence their ancestors came (by satellite). So for the first generations especially, they are watching Lebanese TV when they want to connect.

But yes - other religions will be underrepresented as Christianity has been in the past (except on Sundays).

7. It's Wednesday — the lead-in to the miniseries.
Whether they schedule more depends on the ratings for the series.

8. Discovery Channel
We don't have cable TV, but we were at some relatives who do. We wanted to let our 10 yr old watch some discover channel, but it was all "Special Forces" this and "A-1 Abrahms Tanks" that...all military stuff. Maybe it was Warmonger Week or something.

10. That was probably
during the weeklong preview of the "Military Channel" or whatever it was called. Ridiculous. (I'm not being facetious, this is the reason no doubt)

Discovery Channel nowadays is mainly Monster Garage and American Chopper, stuff like that. It's entertaining but not really Discovery type stuff of yore. Mythbusters is pretty close, though.

I grew up without cable TV. When I live on my own, out of a dorm setting, I'm not getting it. Who needs to waste all that time?

11. It's like that most of the time
the same with the History Channel. Most evenings I tune in have some sort of military program on.

12. I don't understand it.
If I was insanely religious, I'd have a wide variety of media outlets from which to choose, whether it be religious cable programming, or a Christian radio station, or a wide variety of Christian literature. I wouldn't expect (and probably wouldn't trust) NBC to be my source of religious information or entertainment.

I've noticed that NBC and their many cable channels have been doing a huge amount of religious programming in the last few months. I guess they figure it's an untapped source of market share, but they're probably losing more than they're gaining.
