3. Well, since the 'journalists' spent months promoting the goddamned disaste
I suppose they were a little too sheepish to mention that it has turned out so, um, 'well'

7. Maybe even an underestimate
Over at Antiwar.com they're citing $300 billion now as the overall tally (pending the almost certain approval of Bush's new $80 billion budget request for Iraq, with a much smaller portion dedicated to the Afghan narco-state we've fostered).

Fabulous pictures BTW, chlamor.

8. What sucks is....
that none of those categories are of concern to the current administration. Those $$$ clicking off are going right into the pockets of their contributors. Those $$$ clicking off are coming out of our pockets.

The New American Way.

9. $300 billion for Iraq yet we can't even afford
a measly $2 billion or so for Amtrak, a nationwide rail system that is extremely useful for millions of working- and middle-class Americans every year. Amtrak has always been a federally subsidized program with the ticket fees supplementing the subsidies; that's precisely how it's viewed in Europe and Japan. The very nature of the rail system makes it almost unsustainable as a private business alone since the rails are community-operated; only freight services are really profitable.

Mark my words, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Amtrak issue turns out to be a "sleeper" that utterly clobbers the Rethugs (and any idiot Dems who join the Rethugs) who refuse to support continuing Amtrak. A lot of people, Dem and Repub-- a good deal of the GOP base in fact-- uses those trains as a matter of necessity, and there's hardly any constituency (other than Objectivist loonies) who's sold on shutting down the rails. Watch for even Trent Lott and his ilk to turn against the President on the Amtrak issue.

10. Keep talkin' up the Amtrak issue
and the need for light rail. You are right on the mark.

One year of energy use in US military equates to 22 years use of energy use in all sectors of US mass transit-such as it is.
