Attention Cell Phone Owners
A friend send this to me:

"In a few weeks, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing
companies and you will start to receive
sale calls. You will be charged for these calls. Call this number from
your
cell phone 888-382-1222. It is the national DO NOT CALL list. It only
takes
a minute of your time. It blocks your number for 5 years. Please pass
this
on to any one you know who doesn't want to be hassled.

You can also register for the National Do Not Call Registry by going
on-line to: <http://www.ftc.gov/donotcall/>."

7. Senator Barbara Boxer sent me
a letter telling me recommending signing up for the do not call list, so I would tend to believe it is legit and not a rumor.

5. Here's the real deal:
For Release: December 10, 2004

FTC: National Do Not Call Registry Accepts Both Cell Phone and Home Phone Numbers

The Federal Trade Commission reminds consumers that the National Do Not Call Registry has accepted personal cell phone and home phone number registrations since it opened for consumer registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.

To register a telephone number on the National Do Not Call Registry, or to file a complaint, consumers should visit www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236). Consumers registering a phone number online will be asked to provide a valid e-mail address to which a confirmation of the registration will be sent. A registration is not complete until the consumer clicks on the link in this e-mail. Consumers registering by phone must call from the phone number they wish to register.

13. Don't give telemarketers your number!
The government provides that list to telemarketers. If you put your name on the list, then more of them will have it! I get 10x the number of calls at home now as compared to before I was on the list.

14. That is odd...
Mine went down to zero and I was getting several a week. You should be more aggessive about this. It is, after all, the law.

17. Even if this is a hoax, I have inadvertently eliminated most of the
telemarketers who used to call me. I had a virus that was phoning England, Australia and other foreign countries. So for free (after I got rid of the Trojan horse) I got Sprint to block all overseas calls. Surprise, surprise, it also eliminated most of the telemarketers who were calling. I still get local salesmen/saleswomen but they are few and far between. I've gone from getting a salesman on the phone at least three times a day to getting maybe two a week.

20. It's illegal to use auto-dialers to dial cellphone numbers
The cellphone numbers are not being released to telemarketing companies. They are, however, preparing an opt-in 411 service for cellphone users.
