The way it's been described, though, it seems like no one even bothered to find out why the guy was there before going medieval on him. Someone apparently went up to him and spoke to him "in Asian" (quoting MSNBC), but that only increases the possibility of at least a language barrier aggravating the situation.

Now I read something about him having a ski mask on... of course that would be another matter altogether.

But from what I had heretofore read, the possibility of autism (or any number of other conditions) was not unreasonable.

An autistic person would very likely have just stared unresponsively if a bunch of SWAT guys pointed guns at him. He would not view it the same way we would... it would probably just confuse him (depending on the severity of his condition).
