"We Need To Fuck!" Bill Maher's hilarious line on his best show this year
That was in response to all the pharmacists refusing to fill "prescriptures" on their own moral grounds.
Despite his questionable attitude toward *'s invasion of Iraq, this show was fabulous!
It was a treat to see the knowledgeable Ian McShane (the evil Sweringen from Deadwood) and Arianna Huffington was in fine form.
They even had the freeper on their side before the end!
What do you all think?

1. I don't get HBO anymore...
But I have always loved Maher's way of talking about things.

It's shame he has been caught in the media awe over Iraq's semi-election, though. It has made him forget the horror of the last 14 years of US policy towards Iraq.

4. I see what you're saying, but
I've stopped trying to find solutions to political problems from our comedians. It's their job to make us laugh and if they happen to agree 90% with my philosophies, that's an added bonus.
But with Bill who appeared to be 'caving to the right' in his last few shows, tonight's was a return to his more enlightened ones.

15. The thing about political humor is that it's about poking
fun at the foibles of our leaders. If you cave into them then you aren't funny. I often thought that most comedians really missed a goldmine in not going after Bush, instead they kept doing Clinton penis jokes. I know Johnny Carson would have skewered and roasted Bush on a nightly basis. There was just too much there not to. Even though Letterman and even Leno at times do some gentle jabs at Bush, they so miss great opportunities and have tarnished their star power because of it.

27. Leno and Letterman ruined themselves
with their continual hackneyed Clinton jokes...years after he was out of office. They've become dinosaurs...like wrinkled old lounge acts in Las Vegas living off decades past glory. They could have continued to be forces. But they let the Bushies cow them into mediocrity and insipidness.
I can't imagine why anyone would waste their time with either Leno or Letterman anymore.

Basically those shows are fillers until Conan time, my favorite mainstream comic.:7

2. Yeah, Bill did a good job of putting Richard Perle down,
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 11:18 PM by Cleita
and then Arianna Huffington did a good job of putting Bill down when he praised Bush on bring Democracy to Iraq. Then then descended into something about Arianna finding Bill a wife and he quipped that Democracy would come to Iraq first.

The audience laughed out loud everytime Perle lied.

11. He really gave it to Perle. No one on the Sunday talk shows would speak
to Perle so directly--calling him out on so many points about the war. And the audience laughing at his answers was icing on the cake!

26. Bill kept calling Perle "The Prince of Darkness" to his face over
and over again. He also made another slam at Perle (I forget the comment) and TPOD gave him a look that could kill. Mahre just laughed and said he thought that Perle was going to shoot him with a bolt of lightning after that comment. Bill is still wrong about the war but he was in fine fettle last night.

He is having another "conservative" show on the 22nd. Whoopee. Oh, geeze, Bill, get over playing fair and just wanting to be loved by everyone. You either drink the Kool Aid or you don't but don't swing both ways from week to week.

I liked the one from last week with Whoopi Goldberg. I'm glad someone talked to Maher about Iraq and all that. Definietly have to catch the rerun. I didn't get to see it since I'm at my grandparents and they don't have HBO.

30. Although Arianna used to make me really mad when
she was on the dark side, she was still intelligent and articulate about what she said, even though she had blinders on at the time. Those other two dames must have gone to the Condi Rice school of obfuscation, how to say nothing while talking a lot, or in their cases ranting a lot.

Ian McShane. I watch "Deadwood" and when I saw he was a guest I was hoping he wouldn't turn out to be a wingnut. What a pleasant surprise! A flaming liberal armed with more facts than all the Faux News "journalists" put together.
And Cuomo, always a class act. Wish he was our president.

Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 02:32 PM by cidliz2004
I also love that he emphasized that we were taken into the war on lies and the Bush ran the war showing utter incompetence, but he lost me when he said that it actually may work out for the best. I was so glad that Arianna lit into that statement. I wonder where Bill is getting his information the the ME is now magically being transformed because of our invading Iraq. I cannot believe that he actually reads the general garbage that is out there calling themselves news shows and News papers.

Got to watch Bill next week when Wes Clark is on.

41. Maybe Bill could join my son
who is a Marine, back in Iraq for his second tour, and see for himself what life is like there. Americans seems to be numbed to the numbers of casualties, American and Iraqi. Or maybe Perle could get his fat chickenhawk ass over there with the rest of the tough talking warmongers who haven't a clue what it's like...either as a soldier or as a civilian. Guys like Perle, Cheney, Gingrich, Wolfowitz, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Delay, and Hannity make me ill. Physically ill. It's not their life. It's not their kid. They dodged and swerved during Viet Nam. Fine. But their macho posturing now is nauseating. Every time I hear a Marine was killed I think it might be my son. And these guys talk about how well it's going.
Bastards.

of the draft, having a son who would be eligible.
I'm not sure I could ever watch anyone making fun of the war.
Yet we must keep some sense of humor to lighten these awful times.
It feels so good to me when somebody with a wide audience expresses the same points of view.
I hope your son comes home safe and sound asap.

45. My son served during Kosovo and went to Aviano, where all of the missions
were flown out of. I was a nervous wreck. Right before he went, we knew that it was just a matter of time before he would be called up and I was crazed. I was living on pins and needles. My son was only there a couple of months and shared the stories of eating pasta and hanging out with the guys out there.

I just cannot fathom being a parent of a child in Iraq or Afghanistan. I don't even want to guess at what depth your emotions are right now. My son had a cake walk. Looking back I probably was overly worried about really nothing. He was in Italy. I just know that if he was still in the service or eligible to be called back (he is neither), I would be sicker than I am already. If he were there, I'd be in jail. I wouldn't be able to handle it and keep sane at the same time and I would be heading out to Washington D.C. and my life would be trashed, but I would not rest until my son was home or God knows what else. I get sick hearing of the poor soldiers now, I get near rage when I see that stupid smug son of a bitch on T.V. trying to do a John Wayne. I think that Rumdum, Wolf Wolf, Dick and the rest should pay with their lives and their families lives. I feel the price of this war should be paid by them all. That included 41' to. As far as all of those that voted for the authorization to go to war for Bush should also pay for their stupidity. They should have known better they had more information and inside insight on this than we did. They were complicit or dumber than dirt. I knew that going to Iraq was a sham, anyone with half a brain knew that. I couldn't believe it as I watched Bush pull in more and more people up till the State of the Union when he said the "N" word. It was so orchestrated. I am no one, yet I saw what was going down. How could people have been so stupid.

I really feel for you, I wish you and your family and your brave son the best. Lets hope that the madness will end soon.

I hope that these kid refuse to serve and go to Iraq - like in big numbers, big enough to get attention. They shouldn't have to go. Send Cheny's kid, Bush's kids....

20. One thing I like about Maher is his use of words.
He doesn't use the words everyone else is using to define what he is saying. Like tonight he called Republicans trying to impeach the judges as childish and ridiculous. He didn't say they were hypocrites, which has been the main mantra. He called them childish and children and it was so much more effective.

34. Gratuitous, eh?
While not everyone who has contracted or died of AIDS has been a Catholic (and I have never heard anyone say as much?), it is indisputable that the Catholic Church has had a horrific impact on the spread of that disease and others. Far too many women and children have been the victims of the Pope's anti-contraceptive stands, as the women have been infected by their husbands and have passed the disease to their children. Preaching abstinence is useless when you are facing the spread of the disease among people who are married. And "natural family planning" does nothing to prevent the spread of communicable diseases- fatal diseases which are fairly containable.

And there are a number of Catholics who blame the Pope and the Church for these antiquated, misogynistic views on contraception, communicable diseases and overpopulation as well.

as american policy affects non-americans. though the former is likely to a lesser extent these days.

the *amount* of contribution of either to the AIDS crisis is debatable. that there is some effect, however, really shouldn't be.

40. Sorry, back at you, what Arianna was trying to say is that as an
organized "corporation" that is all out for helping the poor and disadvantaged the Catholic church has the best opportunity to help these people. (by the way you don't have to be Catholic to get help from the Catholic Church on mass humane projects - incorrect assumption) It is situated in a way that is organized and spread out where it could reach more people than any other organization right now. So, if the Pope was really for helping people that are suffering and in need, he had the perfect opportunity in Africa where millions of people have aids, are contracting aids and dieing of Aids. That is what the position is about Africa, Aides and the Pope. Condoms can be used in a medical way to guard against aides, not just for contraception.

Also, if you were so sensitive about the Pope's burial being that day, you should never have turned Maher on, I knew turning his show on Friday that he would be making cracks about the Pope, I just hoped that they wouldn't be too bad.

Maher is who he is, you don't like him, I probably wouldn't either on a personal level. As a political comedienne I think that he is brilliant (most of the time) I don't agree with him on his religious beliefs and I don't agree with him on his comments about marriage in general, otherwise I pretty much agree with all of his positions. Sometimes I think that he is taking words out of my mouth, our thoughts on certain things are so identical.

I will watch his show and I will grimace when it comes to his views on religion and marriage. I hope that he stays on for a long time.
