Jon Stewart: show never leaving Comedy Central

Stewart picks at extremes to poke at both sides

For years known primarily as a comedian and intermittent TV personality, Jon Stewart, as host of "The Daily Show," has seen his status rise from smart, sporadic funnyman to something uncomfortably approaching the voice of a media-weary generation or two.

In his years as host, Stewart has turned "The Daily Show" from a basic-cable fake-news gig into a cultural powerhouse with all the trimmings: real political capital, that bitch session with ex-"Crossfire" host Tucker Carlson and more influence in last year's presidential election than most of the media he ridicules (recently, his name has even been floated with misguided optimism as some kind of replacement for Ted Koppel). Stewart's a new breed -- the comic cultural critic as rock star -- but it's a precarious spot. What happens when the underground hero goes mainstream, when people start yelling, "When are you going to run for president?" at his comedy gigs?

SNIP

During a brief Q&A, he said his show would never leave Comedy Central because the network " us do whatever the hell we want."

If that's a precarious position, comedians -- and politicians and cable-news hosts for that matter -- should be lucky to find themselves in it.

1. When Bill Maher jumped to ABC, I knew it was only a matter of time...
SOME people know how to learn from OTHER people's mistakes, LOL!

3. Yes Jon is better off as a big fish. Like Johnny Carson was (in less
controversial times Johnny made 20 % of NBC's profits). Smart move. The corporate networks cannot be trusted. Only dollars matter.

A rather common misspelling. Sorry to have to correct you, but it changes the meaning quite a bit.

But I've stopped correcting other people on Internet forums. It takes too much time. :)

Where has his show been lately? Is he off cause of all the basketball or something? He wasn't on at all last week so I wasn't sure if he was on yet. On Yahoo TV listing it has a 1999 airing ().

I missed the show and was going through withdrawls. ;) I'll have to tape the rerun in the morning when I get up.
