A quick review of the four gospels reminds us that Jesus, suspended on the cross, said "I thirst". He was offered, basically, a sponge dipped in vinegar. All four of the gospels concur that Jesus then asked why God had forsaken him, announced "It is finished" and "surrendered up his spirit". He was the first of the three being executed that day to die. My understanding of this matter is that God had seen enough-Jesus had suffered, been beaten, and was now in an irreversible state. His redemptive work was done. Rather than allow him to hang there with the two criminals through the night and into the Sabbath, I believe that God allowed Christ to end his suffering prematurely by "surrendering up his spirit". He suffered until his work was complete, not until his life force expired.
By removing Ms. Schiavo's tube, are we not allowing her to prematurely relinquish her spirit? Like God, can we not feel that "enough is enough"? She has suffered, been exposed to the whole world, and has entered into an irreversible state. While she has not done redemptive work, she has certainly been used to instuct us in life, death, and life after death. I believe that her work is finished, she has surrendered up her spirit, and that she has gone on be with God.
