So as far as the religion flamewars go, can we all agree that......
the radical clerics who market religion on television are a big part of the problem?

3. Very Much Agreed, Walt
They are most un-Christlike people, and very much sully Jesus' teachings and life (am not a death cultist, so am not mentioning his death).

Religion should be private and personal, not marketed....

21. For God/Goddess's sake, WTF do I care what you believe re religion?
Thats pushy and invasive. Some sects of Christianity REQUIRE you to proselytize but I find that entire idea repugnant. If you want to discuss my faith with me, fine, I'm happy to. Otherwise, I see no reason to bring up the subject.

However, I do care how you VOTE!!!!!

5. The basic problem with "organized religion" is the unwillingness
of believers to tolerate deviations from the beliefs. The reason they can't be tolerated is that it exposes their own insecurities about their own beliefs. Science is a religion but it is a self correcting one over time.

34. THANK YOU!
I was hoping somebody would make that connection. Not all Shiites are radical terrorists just like not all Southern Baptists are radical terrorists.

In fact, similar percentages of each sect probably become radical terrorists.

But they had a fertile ground to plow in. Every single one of us has been raised with Christmas/Easter, and charity to those unfortunate pagan children in foreign countries. All they had to do was build on that foundation.

19.  Walt once again you are right.
I am probably repeating myself here. The tent show hucksters of the early 20th. century did great harm to Christianity by using it for thier own game of greed. These early entertainers used the sermon as a way to get the suckers money. They stole thier timing from the rural southern churchs ,mixed in a little hypno trickery, laying of hands and faith healing.Along came t.v. and the audience became much bigger. These creeps are not Christians
they are scam artists like the neocon artists who use thier techniques. No one on DU has been slamming Christianity unless they are freepers trying to get a current of distrust going.
Onward.... there are some groups getting discussion going between religions,it's about democracy .

The top of my personal pet peeve
Although they are near the top they are beat by their brethren that sell false hope to those most in need. Fraudulent faith healers steal both hope and money from those that are desperate for anything.

26. Yes! Even the man who wrote "the purpose driven life" admits that
putting religion on tv perverts it and the leader. He refused the chance 30 years ago. He wanted to stay real.

Walking the walk is what it is all about...no matter who we are and whether or not we were born with the talent to 'have faith' or not.

31. Even so...
I'm speaking personally:
I saw him on tv during the weekend and it was the same spewing of "you can only reach God the way I did" and "you can't find god within" (I'm paraphrasing). It was the same baptist narrow-mindedness that I see from those on tv.
That really turned me off.
However, I do agree with the original post. I see Tilden and other notorious televangelists on STILL despite the fraud and wonder how they got away with it.

36. And many of them will now be asked what they are doing to stop the
tubes being pulled out of the stomachs of people all around them in their home states. A good dose of light and reality is what these groups and 'leaders' need. Unless they hire Karl Rove...they will at some point be shown to be human ..and not all 'white light'.
