Would you register at a internet board that required you to provide your
real first and last name ?

For example would you have registered here at the DU if they had this requirement ?

Has anyone else ran accross this ?
Is this some new deal to cut down on trolls ?

5. Very much so. I would very much like to have a DU where I knew
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 07:35 PM by applegrove
that freepers could be kept to a minimum. I see the idiots all the time - and they disrupt this board terribly (IMHO).

The whole privacy rights thing that came out of Terry Schiavo... struck me as 'change of thinking' and 'getting Liberals to react & join a position without thinking'. Now I see the whole disabled community is scared of the "privacy in death" idea. Of course they would. Total wedge issue (to separate disabilities community from progressives..after a long and fruitful relationship).

DU where you have to give personal information that can be verified would be great. Would keep paid freepers and rovbot operatives from messing up our discussions, conclusion and ideas.

I think it is a very serious issue and would be a great idea.

7. I don't see that much freeper destruction here
Sometimes otherwise liberal people have unpopular ideas that are shouted down by many other folks at DU, but it seems like the threads that are "ruined" by freepers are the threads that are flame wars anyways.

20. Aha, so it is broccoli!
You know, I was brought up to understand that most "likes" and "dislikes" can be changed, i.e. if you really want to you can learn to like broccoli. I always wonder about people who don't want something that is as good for them as broccoli is.

15. You don't think they post some of the knee-jerk responses here that
encourage Progressives to forget themselves and be for "Wedge Issues" - "45 anti-Joe Liebermann threads in a row is some sorta propaganda". You don't think that ever happens?

I know they stir the pot. I cannot say exactly when but I have been on other sites where they are open (and have to be because discussion gets deeper). And they are all over the place there. I would love to see a sort of a port of entry situation at the DU where you at least put in your name a postal code - telephone number... and such. So that the posters feel the potential for being checked out. It will force them to lie if they are paid employees of the right.

I don't really know what the answer is.

18. I don't give them credit for that much subtlety
As far as stirring the pot goes, I think there are some pots that need to be stirred, and there's LOTS of people who seem to have survived a LONG time on DU who are bigtime pot stirrers. 45 anti-Howard Dean threads in a row, and all that good stuff. I've also seen otherwise sober DU'ers issue some rabid knee-jerk responses.

There are people here who are WAY too conservative, and there are people here who are WAY too liberal for my tastes, but hey, it takes all kinds...

21. And if they all had to put down "roots" and their names and verifiable
addresses & tel #s.. just to keep us busy with our own problems within the progressive movement (our Democratic problems rather than problems thrown into the mix to **** us up)I don't think people would give up the DU. And it means we can more easily unite.

I don't think the Repukes and the trolls really want us to be a big strong plurality... they fractured the right into manageable tribes..now they want that for Democrats (divide and not face a plurality of voters).

IMHO

22. Maybe if you had to register
to read the posts??

Seems like trolls are a small problem, but a much more ominous problem is people coming in and ripping quotes out of context.

25. Okay then a monthly to pass test where the new 'password'
gets sent to our email. If you don't get the email (if your email is phony) and reconfirm every single month.. you get blocked? You keep your original password to log on... but periodically have to update your membership.

Could be run on a massive database?

27. It would not change your actual password. It would just be a monthly
test. So that freepers, trolls and conservative operatives cannot use the 'loopholes' in the bulletin boards to kick up needless fuss and keep us from moving ahead.

14. Du does not require that info in order to post,
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 07:50 PM by moof
but that does bring up part of the reason for not wanting to do it personally. DU is likely to be a place that the Ashcroft and Co. would have gleaned/hacked to get names for their lists. For that reason no matter how unlikely, personally the posting would not be worth it.

mainly because I think it would be easy to locate the very IP addresses that I use to post here. I would hate to waste my fellow taxpayer's funds making Agent Mike work overtime to find me.

Either you give your real name or you don't post,
those are the only two choices.

13. All this troll talk reminded me of a 78 rpm record I had as a little
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 08:08 PM by rzemanfl
kid "The Three Billygoats Gruff." Troll under the bridge sang, "I'm a troll, foldeyroll, I'm a troll, foldeyroll and I'll eat you for supper." The two littler billygoats both said wait for my brother, he's a bigger meal. The third billygoat kicked the troll's ass.

So we need to find that goat. Or get the trolls to say "foldeyroll" so we know where they are.
