A leak from the WH.....
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 10:25 PM by charlyvi
Daily Kos reports that someone from the WH leaked the story that Shrub did not want to come back to Washington to sign the Terri Schiavo bill:

As Dubya starts to see his numbers slide, This Week reported that the Bush administration are starting to distance themselves from Republicans on Capitol Hill, leaking that Bush didn't even want to return to Washington to sign the Schiavo bill last Sunday.

. . . If it's true, it's about as galactically craven and poll driven a rowback as I've ever heard. Did one of Bush's minions really say something this cowardly and gutless?

www.dailykos.com

Oh boy, does he look desperate!

why did he rush back to DC to do it...

He's the pResident -- he could have refused to sign it -- just like he refused to sign the Texas Patient Bill of Rights while governor -- of course during the 2000 campaign he said he supported it

He said Bush could have signed it in Texas but he wanted a "Mission Accomplished" moment of stepping off Marine One on a Sunday evening. Calling his vacation early to sign it.

Now the WH pretends someone FORCED him to sign it.

Bush signed the Texas bill to pull the plug on people, before he signed the US Congressional bill to prevent pulling the plug on people.

He supported pulling the plug before he didn't support pulling the plug.

14. Does he believe in the Culture of Life or not?
When he signed that piece of shiet legislation he said he had to do this because of his Culture of Life.

Is he taking that back now? Because if he is, there are two possibilities:

1) The legislation was not required by the Culture of Life, or
2) it is, but Bush didn't want to do it anyway.

Which is it?

27. WP article alludes to this:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A3797-2005Mar26.html

<snip>
The juxtaposition of racing through the night in Air Force One to sign legislation intended to force doctors to reinsert Schiavo's feeding tube and choosing not to use his bully pulpit to advocate for her life afterward demonstrates how uncomfortable the matter has become for the White House. For years, Bush has succeeded politically in stitching together the disparate elements of the conservative movement, marrying the libertarian and family-values wings of his party. Now he faces a major Republican rupture.

Polls show the vast majority of Americans, including conservatives and evangelical Christians, disapprove of the decision by Bush and Congress to get involved in the Schiavo matter. And more worrying for the White House, those polls have also shown a significant drop in Bush's overall approval ratings.

"Sure, Mister President," Karl agrees. "Just think of the millions of people who will see how wonderful you are to leave your vacation to save the life of an ill woman."

Georgie hesitates and glances at Karl. "They'll love me? Are you sure?"

Karl grabs Georgie's coat. "Sure they will. Trust me."

With a smile, Georgie slips on the coat.

42. I should've known it was too good to be true
Makes me wonder even more if this is a Karl Rove set up or something done by Tom DeLay himself. Usually with a Rove set up it specifically involves Bush in the plan to make him look better. Of course he wouldn't want to disrupt his vacation. Duh. :eyes: It's George. That's why when Stewart showed the video clip of him returning to the House he looked like he didn't care and was slow about it. It was one of those "you brought me here for this shit?" type of ordeal. I love DailyKos. They're awesome and discover tons of stuff. Now how to make people believe it?

Just gets Condi, Karl or Dick to explain to him, then slaps on his John Henry.

Two bushies for the price of one. He's a lame duck now. And Jeb and Frist are goners! :) This is almost as good as a fresh election!

71. But this time the damage control won't work.
No one--and I mean NO ONE--believes that George W Bush would interrupt his vacation for something he didn't want to sign. Not only sign, but make a huge PR splash about signing. He put it out on the street, then stepped in it big time.

They're just digging the hole deeper. I can't believe Karl isn't telling them to shut up.

77. I think so.
After all, if 62% of the public think the Schiavo legislation was politically motivated:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3367748

Then I can't really see them thinking the back-tracking isn't politically motivated as well. ;)

Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 12:48 AM by rocknation
Tom Delay vanishes from the Schiavo case when it's revealed that he pulled the plug on his father. Jeb whines about his lack of power when it's revealed that he was planning to snatch Terri under cover of a phony appeal of the court order. Terri's parents decide to abort their mission when it's revealed the her father pulled the plug on HIS mother. And now it turns out that Bush was once again the "victim" of "bad advice?" ANOTHER broken bullshit meter!

92. And ineffectual.
I don't think he has much integrity--when he campaigned against Daschel (?), something no Senate Majority Leader has ever done to the Minority Leader, I thought this man is a lowlife piece of shit. Plus, a heart surgeon that makes a neurological diagnosis using a four year old video doesn't rate too highly in the integrity department to me.

He seems marginally competent as a politician. But, he has been touted as a talented cardiac surgeon. I always wonder about that. Anybody know if he was really that good at heart transplants?

They could have brought it to him in Texas, surely? That trip was purely grandstanding. Here's a good DU thread on the hypocrisy of droppng everything and flying off to DC for this and FAILING to lift a finger for so many other things:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=1675026
Title: "Americablog: Issues Bush Didn't Rush Back To D.C. For..."

Lots of other examples too. And contrast the "concern" over a woman who has been irreversibly brain-dead for 15 years with his non-response to the killings at Red Lake.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=1340000
Title: "Native Americans Criticize Bush's Silence (in contrast to Schiavo case)"

What a prince. How ANYONE can take him seriously at all, let alone consider him a "nice guy," or even recognizably human, is beyond me. He clearly is a soul mate of "Republican Jesus," who appears irregularly as an unofficial Administration spokesperson at the satirical progressive blog Jesus' General ( http://patriotboy.blogspot.com ):
