Smackdown delivered to Condi Rice
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/3/3/10423/16639

This is a diary from Dailykos. It has an article written by former Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy or an open letter to Condi Rice. Wow. You must head over and read the whole thing. Makes me proud to be Canadian. Thank you Lloyd for pointing out the obvious.

snip - Your boss did not avail himself of a similar opportunity to visit our House of Commons during his visit, fearing, it seems, that there might be some signs of dissent. He preferred to issue his diktat on missile defence in front of a highly controlled, pre-selected audience.

Such control-freak antics may work in the virtual one-party state that now prevails in Washington. But in Canada we have a residual belief that politicians should be subject to a few checks and balances, an idea that your country once espoused before the days of empire.

If you want to have us consider your proposals and positions, present them in a proper way, through serious discussion across the table in our cabinet room, as your previous president did when he visited Ottawa. And don't embarrass our prime minister by lobbing a verbal missile at him while he sits on a public stage, with no chance to respond.

9. Now that IS Leadership -- and dig these quotes:
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 01:08 PM by understandinglife
I know it seems improbable to your divinely guided master in the White House that mere mortals might disagree with participating in a missile-defence system that has failed in its last three tests, even though the tests themselves were carefully rigged to show results.

But, gosh, we folks above the 49th parallel are somewhat cautious types who can't quite see laying down billions of dollars in a three-dud poker game.

make sure you mention "the rock". It's a large boulder stuck in front of the University that every year people try to climb. <shrug> It was a tradition. When I went there, (back in the 70's), usually the women's team won because they would work together. Take that any way you want to <g>.

17. Real Smooth
Missile Counter-Attack

Now, I understand that there may have been some miscalculations in Washington based on faulty advice from your resident governor of the "northern territories," Ambassador Cellucci. But you should know by now that he hasn't really won the hearts and minds of most Canadians through his attempts to browbeat and command our allegiance to U.S. policies.

Sadly, Mr. Cellucci has been far too closeted with exclusive groups of 'experts' from Calgary think-tanks and neo-con lobbyists at cross-border conferences to remotely grasp a cross-section of Canadian attitudes (nor American ones, for that matter).

I invite you to expand the narrow perspective that seems to inform your opinions of Canada by ranging far wider in your reach of contacts and discussions. You would find that what is rising in Canada is not so much anti-Americanism, as claimed by your and our right-wing commentators, but fundamental disagreements with certain policies of your government. You would see that rather than just reacting to events by drawing on old conventional wisdoms, many Canadians are trying to think our way through to some ideas that can be helpful in building a more secure world.

These Canadians believe that security can be achieved through well-modulated efforts to protect the rights of people, not just nation-states.

That episode focused on how bloggers manage to scoop the MSM (though it's really not so much better access to information as willingness to report it), particularly with regards to Gannon/Guckert's online entrepeneurship. There was a great Colbert segment, too.

59. Yep...
Better known as back bacon or pea bacon (???????? I don't know why, either). The corn meal's optional. The commercial stuff is almost invariably over-salty to the point of inedibility.

I think that the stuff is similar to Irish bacon, very popular when eaten with boiled cabbage.

Beats haggis, anyway.

Is referred to as "Breakfast Ham", at least in the parts of Ontario I have visited. Smoked pork tenderloin, to be exact.

Then there's "Canadian Bacon", the only non-documentary made by Michael Moore. Fun movie.

If we're going to spend money, Mr. Goodale added, it will be on day-care and health programs, and even on more foreign aid and improved defence."

I was listening to Radio Canada Intl on my shortwave radio this evening, and he was interviewed on As It Happens. I absolutely loved it. He was saying how basically, there really isn't any debate here in Washington nowadays. It's basically Bushie's way or the highway. And he said Condi needs to come to Canada and see the debate that takes place there, with all points of view being expressed.

who want to move to Canada. Now, as a Canadian, I agree. We are the best country in the world. But, that is a subjective opinion. I have this terrible feeling that a lot of Americans, be they red or blue, will be quite surprised at the difference in the culture. It's hard to explain. Most U.S.ians are very individualist. Here, most of us consider the society as a whole. Even in our most conservative area. It's a given that you will pay relatively high taxes; but you do get universal health care. It's not free. Nothing is free. That's why you pay high taxes. But, our priorities and focus are on the good of society. We have our neo-cons and our religious fanatics. But for the most part, we deal. We believe in multi-culturalism and bilingualism. Quebec is a very important part of our country and they are what we call a "distinct society". It is different here. It's not America-lite.

Small businesses: Significantly lower corporate tax rates in Canada than in the US

The average corporate tax rate in Canada is now below the average U.S. tax rate, and will be more than 6 percentage points lower by 2008.

83. YW! But remember, DON'T TELL AMERICANS! Also don't mention
that we do not wait months for medical operations, we do not hate our medical system, we do not live in igloos and drive seld dogs to work, we do not have snow all year round, we have areas that declare a national emergency if they get 1" of snow in a winter, and the coldest spot every year in North America is NOT in Canada, it's in mainland USA.

;)

69. The 'master' comment is going to get him in trouble
As in referring to Bush as Condi's "master."

The slavery allusion probably went right over his head.

Otherwise, he's dead on.

The letter was snarky and erudite at the same time. A thing of beauty.

72. Canadian press did a slew of "America GROW UP already" articles
Smacking down bush & Rice et al for their boorish childish little temper tantrums and total lack of understanding what DEMOCRACY and SOVEREIGN NATION mean.

I concur;

America, GROW UP already!.

"If you want to have us consider your proposals and positions, present them in a proper way, through serious discussion across the table in our cabinet room, as your previous president did when he visited Ottawa."

But, but, he got a blow job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

89. Doesn't get any better than this
I wonder what the reaction will be when BushCo finds out Mr Axworthy's a Christian, too. :P

He's also an author and a past Nobel Peace Prize nominee. A couple of his books are on amazon.com:

90. Great piece.. well written, to the point
logical, truthful, and humanitarian. Too bad it will go right over the heads of the Heads Of State. Canada's looking better and better. As each week passes and the administration drives another stake into the heart of America I'm thinking more and more of leaving...

so we can have him personally see Condi and tell it like it is.

He definitely rocked on this one....
