so if you detect anything that sounds un-North American about my accent, it would be my Bajan accent coming through (Bajan is the nickname Barbadians like to use). However it is a lot less noticeable than it was when I left the island approx 25 years ago.

There was a connection to Ireland and Scotland in that shortly after the island was first settled by the English, Oliver Cromwell (the guy that had King Charles 1st head chopped off) shipped a lot of Irish and some Scottish prisoners to the island (and to other West Indian colonies. This would have been around the mid 1600's. They were used as indentured servants to work on tobacco and sugar cane plantations. However the indentured servants were eventually replaced with slaves imported from Africa. I've had other people ask me if I was Irish or Scottish. If there is any Scotts or Irish influence detectable in the modern Bajan accent, I would assume that would have been where it came from.
