Alert to those of you wishing to see CBC's doc. on the media in America
It's called "Sticks and Stones."....It's repeated tonight at 7PM on CBC Newsworld if you live close to the Canadian border and can get it....I watched it the other night and it is excellent. The reporter Bob McKeown does some good stuff on Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter, among others....Coulter he really skewers....She tries to convince him that Canada was with the U.S.A in the war in Viet Nam...hahaha.....Didn't she hear about all the young men who came north at the time to escape that war?....McKeown also reveals that Rachel Marsden the right wing Canadian nut who Dennis Miller has on his show as representing "the Canadian media viewpoint" has no credibility....In 1997 she was found to have falsely accused her former swim coach at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby B.C. of sexual harrassment....In 2002 she was charged with criminal harrassment of a former Vancouver radio host, to which she pleaded guilty....I don't get Fox network here, but I understand O'Reilly had her on his rebuttal show the other night...I really wish those Americans who hang on his every word could see this documentary!

2. Thanks, glarius, I missed it the first time...
but will be sure to catch it tonight!

Here's a link to a CBC article on Marsden's harassment charge. I love this sentence from it:

"Crown counsel has requested an evaluation of her mental state."

http://vancouver.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=bc_marsden20021121

Looks like fellow harassers, O'Lielly and Marsden, have discovered more they have harassment tendencies in common as well as their hatred of Canada.

3. Thanks for the link
All I could find was that she had pleaded guilty to the charge....It's really unbelievable that two sleezes like O'Reilly and Marsden could be effecting public opinion on morality....:puke:

4. Wait there were no Canadians in Vietnam?
Why is there a memorial in Canada for the Canadians who died there?

http://www.glanmore.org/cdncas/northwall2002.html

Here is some information from the CBC that lists 30,000 Canadians were in Vietnam.

http://archives.cbc.ca/300c.asp?id=1-71-1413

I am no Ann Coulter fan but for the CBC to say there were no Canadians in Vietnam is a disservice to the Canadian boys who died in that hell hole.

5. What the CBC said was that Canada did not participate in that war.
There were some Canadian citizens who went down there and joined the American army....There's a difference...:)

7. Canada Supplied Arms to the US during Vietnam.
They also provided the US with help in testing Agent Orange. And I am not sure how 30,000 people are able to sign up for war without some sort of Government involvement.

13. If you have dual citizenship - Canadian/American and you...
live in the US you can be drafted by the US and this is what must have happened to your BIL. Canada doesn't have a draft so, even if Canada had participated in the Vietnam war, which it DIDN'T, no one would have been drafted.

Ann Coulter was blowing smoke out of her butt as usual.

10. They were free to go south and join the U.S.A army, and that's what they
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 03:21 PM by glarius
did. It took many years for the 30,000 to accumulate....As for Agent Orange, who knows what the U.S.A gov't told the Canadian gov't about the testing?....Or what they threatened Canada with??????

11. They were not free to go south,
According to Canadian law it was illegal for these people to join a foreign military but Canada turned a blind eye instead of putting their foot down. Also after researching I found that Canada was producing Agent Orange and selling it to the US knowing it would be used in Vietnam.

In my opinion the Canadian Government played both sides in the war, working for peace with the Vietnamese government while supplying man power and arms to the US.

17. Thanks for the link
Our government was definitely playing both sides but that was not what Coulter said. She said that Canada sent troops to Vietnam which was a false claim. Had she said Canada supplied arms, etc, she would have been on much firmer ground.

As usual, Ann, didn't have her facts straight before opening her mouth, typical of her.

Who knows what threats the U.S.A. government made....It is still happening today....We are being punished for not joining the Iraq war with trade problems in different areas....I'm sorry, but I'll trust my government ahead of yours!!!

8. Canadian, but not Canadian troops
Many Canadians volunteered and joined the U.S. military in order to fight the Vietnam war, however, to my knowledge, Canada never sent any troops to Vietnam to fight in that war. The memorial exists because Canadians did die in Vietnam, but they were fighting as part of the U.S. military, not the Canadian military.

14. "Journeys with George"
Airing at 10 p.m. EST tonight on CBC Newsworld (on The Passionate Eye")

from the CBC website ..

"This is “Dubya” unplugged. The baloney and cheetos-eating, wisecracking Texan you didn’t see on TV… the real man behind the candidate. Shot with a digital camcorder, this video diary is the work of filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi (daughter of Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi), who was also covering the campaign for NBC News. It documents her year and a half-long road trip with George W. Bush as he struggled to evolve from a cowboy into a statesman. Besides documenting the drama behind the scenes of a political campaign, it exposes the unholy alliance between the reporters and the candidate and deconstructs how the U.S. elects their presidents."

This might be interesting

15. Wish I could see it.
An aside: Love Canada by the way. When we travel East from WI on vacation we've gone North through Sault Ste. Marie (twice time permitting). I loved Niagara Falls Canadian side only when our kids were young.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we have Mexican citizens fighting in Iraq right now. Wasn't there a flap about a year ago involving a young Mexican that had gone there believing he would be granted a green card upon his return? He won the case. The idea that we do not use mercenaries is false.
