Iraq Vet - Death by Cop?
Did anyone else hear this story?

I heard it on the morning news sometime last week - can't remember which channel, or what day.

A vet who had recently come back from iraq on leave, and due to go back went to a liquor store i think, and asked the guy in the shop to call the cops. when the cops arrived he opened fire, with I think an M-16, it was all caught on tape. he injured one cop and then was gunned down and killed himself.

His mom said he really didn't want to go back to iraq, but the news story said they weren't sure why he did it. I'm thinking death by cop, which is really messed up to think this kid saw his only way out was being killed by the cops.

I thought thye would run it more, since they had video, but nope. zip, nada nunca.

Does any body have further info on this? was it posted around here anywhere?

I think it's pretty messed up that the only thing we learned form Vietnam was to hide anything that might further inflame the anti-war movement.

1. Yes, it was all over DU a few days ago.
Here is a link to the main thread, which includes a link to the Modesto Bee which has video coverage of the incident.

2. Over the weekend...

... the police issued a statement that it wasn't death by cop--that he was actually a gang member who was high on coke, and that he wasn't going back to Iraq.

Of course, everything he had said to his family and friends about being fearful of going back to Iraq was discounted in the police statement.

The San Diego area (where the soldier was stationed) is very military and very conservative--can't have it be general knowledge that some military personnel would rather have themselves killed than fight George's War.

Edit to add stationing info.
