Progress for America Launches TV Ad Promoting Social Security Reform

Progress for America (PFA) today launched "Courage" - our first television commercial dedicated to promoting Social Security reform.

Despite the Pollyannaish claims of some organizations and government officials, the Social Security system is in crisis and needs to be fixed immediately. Although Social Security is sound for today's seniors, it does not have the resources to pay promised benefits to younger workers. All Americans must work together NOW to strengthen Social Security for our children and grandchildren in the future.

The longer we wait, the more difficult and expensive it is to fix the problem!

PFA supports using the following principles to reform & modernize Social Security:

1. No changes in Social Security for those at or near retirement;

2. Younger workers should be allowed to place some of their own payroll taxes in a voluntary personal retirement account - a nest egg they can call their own, government cannot take away & they can pass on to their children.

Thankfully, courageous leaders like President Bush and others in Congress are determined to reform Social Security and ensure that younger workers can retire in security while simultaneously protecting today's seniors.

Please forward this email to three friends to help us promote Social Security reform and urge Congress to act NOW! Otherwise, Congress will put off the difficult decisions.

During the past year, PFA's sister organization, The Progress for America Voter Fund (PFA-VF), established itself as the leading Conservative "527" political organization. PFA-VF spent almost $50 million promoting President Bush's public policy agenda and efforts to win the war on terror by counter-balancing Liberal extremists who were attacking President Bush's agenda. In the coming weeks and months, PFA will promote President Bush's plans to reform Social Security and the tax code as well as end lawsuit abuse and confirm common-sense judges.

You can find out more about PFA & learn how you can take action to support Social Security reform on our web site at www.progressforamerica.org.

2. Yes report it.

As for the email, I love their principle #1. So, what constitutes near? What about if I am injured and cannot work anymore? What recourse do I have if I am one year away from this imaginary cut-off?
This crap is absolutely ridiculous. But I guess that about sums up this presidency anyway, huh?

On Edit:
To report any unwanted e-mails you receive, simply forward the messages to [email protected]. Make sure that you include the header information in the e-mail.

3. The propaganda campaign is starting
I got a phone call yesterday from the same group. Halfway through the gal's spiel I cut her off, saying I didn't support Social Security privatization and hung up.

What's interesting is the phone number they called was our business line, listed under our company name in the phone directory.

5. use this utility for a start
http://www.hexillion.com/

Enter the domain name (minus the http and www) into the field at the bottom of the front page. Odd details though and I couldn't resolve the domain name to an IP. Most odd...

Be careful before you start firing off mail.

6. They forgot to mention that Bush plans to wreck Social Security
He doesn't want to have to redeem those $1.7 trillion in bonds in the Trust Fund.

The Iceberg Cometh
By PAUL KRUGMAN

Published: January 11, 2005

Last week someone leaked a memo written by Peter Wehner, an aide to Karl Rove, about how to sell Social Security privatization. The public, says Mr. Wehner, must be convinced that "the current system is heading for an iceberg."

9. A step by step instruction for reporting Spam to the ISP
HOW TO REPORT SPAMMERS

1. Use whatever means your email program has to view and copy
the headers from the spam. - In Netscape Mail, try options, show
headers, all. -In Eudora Pro (and possibly Eudora Lite), click on the
blah blah button inside the incoming message.

2. Read the headers and attempt to determine the i.s.p - from an
address which ends with .com or .net. There may be several due to
a convoluted forwarding mechanism the spammer may have used.
One may even be his domain - which is likely to be served by an
i.s.p., but will not indicate the name of the i.s.p. The address in
the received line is usually the best bet.

3. If you're not sure if an address is the spammer's domain, rather
than a legitimate i.s.p, go to
http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois
Type in the ispname.com or ispname.net (Substitute the name of
the i.s.p. for ispname above). The information you receive should
tell you the name and email address of the underlying i.s.p., and
perhaps even the addresses of the manager, president etc.

4. Send a copy of the offending spam WITH FULL HEADERS,
(and if possible, with the subject intact) to: [email protected]
(or .net). Usually, this address works. Others you can try include:
[email protected], [email protected] and also
[email protected]. The address for the administrative contact
listed in whois is also an excellent bet. Try two or three, but don't
give in to the temptation to spam everyone at the i.s.p with antispam!

5. Include at the top a brief complaint about the spammer and ask
politely that the i.s.p take effective action against this person and
spamming in general.

In most cases, you will receive a response from the ISP within
24 hours - thanking you, and letting you know that they have
terminated the spammer's account. (The primary exception is
when the spammer operates his own I.S.P. or server, but at least
you may locate the email address by which you can contact him.)

10. My Reply To Them: Prove It!
It's in crisis? Show me the numbers that prove it. Also, i'll tell ya what, raise the withholding to 15% personal on anybody who puts money aside in the individual account to pay for the transition. When the transition's paid for, we'll lower the rate back down.

If the system is in such deep crisis, sacrifices have to be made, don't they?

Idiots! (And liars, too!)
The Professor
