Al Gore's INdTV: The People's Programmer

Tuning in to Gore TV: Little is publicly known about the cable news network planned by almost-president Al Gore except that it will be called INdTV (say it like "indie"), aims to wow the youth market, has set up shop in San Francisco and is supposed to launch this year. But what kind of shows will it carry?

We've received a glimpse of some of the programming envisioned by INdTV execs, who just sent out an e-mail to prospective "digital correspondents," seeking edgy video submissions to serve as pilots. Gore's programming gurus say they hope to "democratize television" by relying on Generation Y contributors and "real-life video." An insider cautioned us yesterday that the e-mail represents just a sliver of the conceptual pie, but the potential must-see lineup includes: ....

On Tuesday, May 4, former Vice President Al Gore and his business partner, Joel Hyatt, announced that they had purchased the cable TV channel Newsworld International, or NWI, from Vivendi Universal for $70 million. They would, they said, turn it into a television network for viewers in their twenties. Reached for comment, television's newest mini-media mogul, Mr. Gore told The Observer that his first task was to hire a programming chief, which he hoped would be his next official announcement. ....

1. I sincerely hope this station
play the real news, and not MSM news.

3. DemocracyNow would be a good start
as their main news program.

4. IT will probably be hit or miss
They can't run too far away from the MSM or they will be labelled as extreme. Personally I anticipate they will be good on environmental stuff and ok on issues affecting college students. I don't expect them to be good at reporting on labor issues, which is a shame.

2. If they do what they are saying, this will be the greatest thing ever.
I would kill for an all-youth oriented, youth programmed channel with independent artist's shows in amateur video format. This sounds like what MTV sans videos should be.

8. "If they do what they.."
In the meantime, you should check out Newgrounds. (www.newgrounds.com)

Youth (and other artists) deposit about 100+ Flash animations a day at that website.

5. How widely will it be available?
I wonder how many cable companies will carry it.

6. Again?
How many times are they going to announce it? Seems to me this has been announced before, more than once.

Wonder if it will really happen.

7. NWI
is the best news coverage available.
Losing NWI and gaining INdTV is simply awful.
Gore has been clear INdTV will not be "political". It will not be a liberal answer to Fox.
So we lose the excellent NWI in exchange for shows named:

• "That's F*&#ed Up:
• "INdTV Paparazzi
• "Addicted: What's your addiction? Food? A fetish? A relationship?
• "INdTV Is The New Black: Are you a trend-spotter?

Losing NWI to this bilge is a huge loss to adults in search of real news reporting.

9. I'm with you, SOS
I'm going to drape my TV in black when NWI goes off the air. It offers Canada-based programming and news programs from around the world, as well as in-depth reporting and interviews.

All you people who spend post after post bitching about Fox and CNN, did you ever watch News World International? Did you?

Probably not.

No, you were too busy naively trusting Al Gore (whom I have observed over a period of 25 years and am therefore less enamored of than some of you are) to build the liberal news station of your dreams.

You already had a liberal station, and you didn't watch it. Now it's going to go away.

And it's going to be replaced by a 24-hour ego trip for unbearably hip airheads who were brought up on video games.

Thanks for nothing, Al Gore. :grr:

11. I never heard of NWI before Gore bought it.
My cable company (Charter) certainly never carried it.

12. It's a digital channel, but even the people who got digital cable
didn't seem interested in watching it, no matter how many times I promoted it. They'd all rather watch Fox or CNN so that they could complain about them.

17. It's as if all the international news sources are being taken away
For those who don't understand why we're upset, imagine the Guardian being taken off the web and replaced by an unmoderated Yahoo group. :-(
