Let's design a law on abortion
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 06:42 PM by cally
In the spirit of compromise, let's figure out what the rules should be. When should abortion be allowed....BY LAW? Not whether you would have an abortion, whether you believe in abortion, but when should society prosecute women and doctors for abortion? (I'm assuming heterosexuals couples in my rant.)

1) A couple has unprotected sex. The woman is pregnant and has an abortion. She should be sent to jail. The man goes on with his life.

2) A couple uses the rhythm method and become pregnant. They both are faithful Catholics. They both lose their jobs and can barely afford to feed their family. They have an abortion. SEND HER TO JAIL!!!
3) A woman is raped. She takes the morning after pill. SEND HER TO JAIL.

4) A woman is in her third trimester of a much wanted child. She finds out she is likely to die if she carries her child to term. She has a third trimester abortion (the fundies call it a partial birth abortion but that is a lie) Kill that woman.

5) A woman is in her third trimester of a much wanted child. She finds out she is likely to die if she carries her child to term and her child will die. She has a third trimester abortion (the fundies call it a partial birth abortion but that is a lie) Kill that woman.

6) An 11 year old thinks she is fooling around with her older cousin. At 5 months, her parents figure out she is pregnant. The Doctor tells them she will face lifelong damage and possible death if she carries this child to term. She has an abortion. Hell, life imprisonment.

So, you're anti-abortion. So am I. I choose laws to encourage education, women's economic advancement, sexual education because I know they reduce rates of unwanted pregnancy. They also promote raising children well.

If you are pro-life and still want to ban abortion, then define when and where. Define the law you want.

Edit: Revised spelling and grammar. I should know by now to not post rants before checking.

1. The perfect way to protect abortion rights....
....is to make it the law that in addition to no elective abortion, EVERY woman who gives birth is entitled to HALF of all the father's earnings for the rest of her life.

Men will come out in droves to keep abortion legal.

2. The ONLY problem with that...
is how to deal with the dimwits that impregnate woman all over the place and have 6 or 7 kids. Someone at my wife's work used to have 7 kids with 5 or 6 different women.
Other than that, I think you are dead on.

3. I would actually be for that as long as the RIGHTS were divided
as equally as the responsibilities.

14. Oh, yeah...an addendum to my law. Any deadbeat who refuses to pay...
Should be required to join the Washington National Castralto Choir.

And if you know what the requirements are to join, you know why it would be effective.

state that the woman,
who is pregnant retains all rights to her body, to the fetus, and to any and all final decisions.

Any questions? Just refer to the 2 choices above!

7. I agree with you on this one.
No male legislators should be voting on the abortion issue. The picture of Bush signing the "partial birth" bill, surrounded by men who will NEVER know the anguish of this choice, was a travesty.

6. "Put up or shut up" law
If you are anti-abortion, your name goes into the pool of potential parents for the next unwanted baby. No choice allowed: if your name is drawn, you raise the child as your own. If you are pro-choice, your name goes into the pool for paying for the next abortion. No hedging: if your name is drawn, you pay the full costs.

9. My pro-life laws
1. Everyone gets access to birth control if they want it.

2. Every public school student gets a real education on birth control options.

3. Every citizen gets health care. Not just ones who have or are married to a person who has health care through their job.

4. Minimum wage is adjusted for inflation so people can afford to raise a child.

5. Nobody can be fired for being pregnant. Not even if they *gasp* aren't married.

6. We put the tax rates back to where they were under Clinton, so poor people aren't shouldering more of the tax burden than they can afford, and the federal government doesn't have to suck money out of programs that help the ability of the poor to afford families.

Those are ineffective laws if the goal is to punish women for getting pregnant, but they are good ones if the goal is to reduce abortions.

13. Whether you support abortion or not seems to me to be based on
when you determine human life begins. There is no way to prove that so I believe that those apposed to abortion have no legal grounds to make law since the law would be based on opinion and not fact.
