San Antonio to strippers: Show some ID

SAN ANTONIO – Strippers must be licensed and wear an identification badge while performing under an ordinance passed early this morning by the San Antonio City Council. Councilman Chip Haass spearheaded the effort, which requires that anyone working at a gentleman’s club get an annual permit and a badge. He said the measure would make clubs safer, reduce the number of underage girls working and cut down on illegal activity.

“I think it’s high time. The community’s been calling for it for a while now,” Haass said. “Some of the larger clubs that are responsible owners, they will not have any problem dealing with this particular ordinance.”

The licensing is beneficial, City Attorney Andrew Martin said, because “it helps us understand exactly who it is that is working in these businesses. It helps us keep track as to whether or not they are following the rules.”

1. Is this something like a taxi medallion?
Is it a metal badge of some kind that needs to be attached to your bumper?

2. I think wearing the badges while performing jeapordizes their
safety. CA has a similar licensing ordinance to prevent underage exotic dancers, but they are not required to wear their badges. Most strippers use aliases when dancing and rightfully so, there are many wackos out there that become obsessed with some of them and begin stalking them if they find out their real name.

4. Yeah no kidding ..
Even most hairdressers black out their real name and addresses on their licenses that are posted.

3. Um, just how much "identification" is involved here?

The badge doesn't concern me half as much as what info they're going to be expected to display on it. Call me crazy, but I'm guessing that some strippers may not really want their patrons to have free access to their real names and home addresses.

7. Two strippers were murdered
in a nearby town, and left in a car a quarter mile from my house not a week ago.

Stalking can and DOES happen, and I agree with you wholeheartedly. Anonimity is vitally important.

6. If I'm not mistaken, Houston tried to pass this a while back
They wanted the dancers to wear IDs with info including their addresses on it...Yeah, that's safe! I guess the theory is that if you'd like to be safe, don't take your clothes off for a living.

10. It did pass in Houston.
The dancers usually clip (with a "p") the ID to the strap of their shoes (where else are they gonna put it?). The ID has their "stage name" but not their real name, IIRC. Copies of all the dancers' IDs are also posted on the wall of the club manager's office.

I think they are cowering people to force their own morality type rules.

Edit: with this so-called mandate, I expect we'll see a lot more back-door morality laws.

14. Why would anyone else have to know?
If the idea is to event underage girls from stripping. Even if it were something that was required to be on record, those records should be kept in a locked drawer in the owner or managers office, not for all the customers to see.

15. Well, obviously they are going to need a Municipal Stripper Inspector
To go around and check everyone's ID.

Bet it's an appointed position...

18. That's what I meant, show their ID to the owners and make them
responsible if underage girls are caught dancing.

16. This Whole Law Is A Red Herring
I'd bet that there are a lot of businesses in TX that also hire underage workers, illegal workers, etc., and they don't require them to wear ID badges. Laws like this make me sick. Adult businesses are easy targets for politicians because they can show the "morality" voters that they're actually doing something when they're not.
Politicians over-legislate the silly things while larger more damaging issues go unchecked.

17. I'm sure the story's getting lots of "coverage" on San Antonio TV....
Fearless reporters, mikes in hand, hard at work from the battle front! (All naughty bits blurred for home consumption.)

Houston TV stations do this a lot.

Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 02:39 PM by lildreamer316
..and you wear it on a garter wrapped around the ankle. Yes, Houston has had this law for years, and not too much trouble for it. (I have a close friend who worked there; still has her ID) The only thing I don't like about it is that it may have your REAL name and prob. addy on it(unless they are exActly like Houston), which would be fairly easy for a customer to see. I think Las Vegas has a similar law, but I don't think you have to wear it on you at all times; just had to be able to produce it when asked.
