Poll question: At what point does the US become a 3rd-world country?
I never thought I'd be wondering this, but it's a valid question now. Is it the healthcare? We live in a country where some seniors pay more than half of their incomes for health insurance, yet vote to keep paying all that and more because they fear the dreaded evils of socialism.

Others just die for lack of care because they have no money.

Is it our schools? Our schools are laughingstocks and tragedies, turning out a few hopeful souls amongst a mass of ignorant fools.

Is it the media? Our news media peddle largely sanitized and dumbed-down fake news.

The law? The Attorney General believes in the legal defense of torture. Our government spies on us and can disappear people at will. Homeland Security agents investigate Rubik's Cubes copyright violations while the FBI valiantly uncovers prostitutes in New Orleans. Ideologues and religious fanatics control the executive branch and are appointing other fanatics and true believers to the judicial branch, even as they solidify their iron hold on the congressional branch and purge the security and intelligence services. Bush is the only American president ever to write lettres de cachet (though he certainly couldn't write them himself). The makers of the voting machines give HIM money. And don't forget - dissent is TREASON.

So: are we there yet? Or do we still have a ways to go? Just let me know when we hit bottom, because I may have a hard time recognizing it once we're there. It all looks bad from here.

Is America a 3rd-world country yet?

1. some parts already are.
Like Miami for instance. However it could still be redeemed. It's gonna take a massive social revolution though.

9. I used to live in Idaho. Pathetic isn't it, yet the rural
people vote against their own interests over and over again.

6. Two things will push us there. Losing the ability to filibuster
judges, and other countries stopping their support for our debt.

7. We already are in alot of ways. We send our lumber to other
countries to be turned into furniture and whatnot, send alot of our oil away to be refined and returned to us---that's one of the signs of being 3rd world---you can't do those things for yourself anymore.
