by Donna LoCicero
Dear Senator Kerry,
I’ve figured out that the reason this feels so awful, so surreal isn’t just because we lost. This isn’t loss. Every Democrat knows what loss feels like. This is something worse. This is theft - theft of our sacred right of voting and thereby, the hijacking of our country.
I want you to know that even though the mainstream media isn’t reporting much of this, a growing army of people believes this. We are determined to unravel this crime... and I can assure you, we’re not going to quit.
Which brings me to your concession speech. I don’t believe you quit. But it was very odd theatre. Watching it, I got the same feeling of disconnect as I did the first time I saw Bush sitting in that classroom for seven minutes.
Something didn’t jibe. In both there’s a sense that what’s going on behind the scenes is bigger than what’s happening in front of the camera. I know you had a recount fund and teams of lawyers ready and waiting to deal with any attempts to steal this election. And, I saw John Edwards come out the night before and promise to count every vote. And I know no Democrat would ever really buy that "stop dragging out the election for the good of the country" line again. Especially when all the votes hadn’t even been counted yet.
I’ve watched you closely this past year and I believe you’re a brave, intelligent politician with integrity. Your friends and family, especially your daughters, reflect well on you. Knowing these things, and following the news closely, many of us have come to the same conclusion: the country is not made up of social conservatives who would rather elect a man who has proven himself a liar and a failure over a man of conviction and political acumen. The exit polls were right.
It’s clear that the Bush Administration never had any intention of relinquishing power. And it’s only in the context of their willingness to stop at nothing and threaten anything or anyone who stands in their way that I can und erstand how you would give us a premature, disconnected-from-reality concession speech.
So I’m not buying it. Please know, Senator, that millions of Americans are not buying it. And we’re trying our damndest to turn a national tragedy, this hijacking of our democracy, around.
Help, as someone once said, is on the way.
