By E&P Staff
Published: November 01, 2004 11:00 AM ET NEW YORK Sunday night, during an interview with NBC's Tom Brokaw on "Dateline NBC," George W. Bush let his interviewer, and millions of viewers, know just how much stock the president puts in editorial endorsements, which have largely turned against him this year.
Brokaw pointed out to the president that conservative London-based magazine The Economist had surprisingly endorsed Sen. John Kerry on Oct. 28 in an editorial that carried the headline, "The Incompetent or the Incoherent?" He related how the Economist went on to note several of Bush's "mistakes" while in office. Then Brokaw asked the president to respond.
Bush replied, "If I worried about editorials, I'd be a nervous wreck."E & P’s exclusive tally of daily newspaper endorsements has Kerry in the lead 208-169, and by an even wider margin when factoring in the circulation of supporting papers. About 60 papers that backed Bush in 2000 have swung over to the Democrat or declared neutrality.
