KMart Halloween Costume - Orange Jumpsuit
I just got an ad mailer from KMart with their children's Halloween costumes in it. I was struck by one of an orange prison jumpsuit. Am I being overly sensitive? I'm sure it's an oversite, but it doesn't seem right, does it? If a kid comes to my door wearing one of these things, the only thing I'll be able to think of is his head being sawed off with a kitchen knife.

2. The black and white jailbird costume...
has been acceptable for years. You're right, the connotation is slightly different. Yet, I think you are being overly sensitive.

Because Americans want to dress their
kids up in symbols that have come to
represent the depravity of our culture?
I am sure their Muslim neighbors and people
with relatives and loved ones serving time
in prisons for non violent offenses will be
ever so happy to fill their candy baskets
as they will evoke such fond feelings in their
cute little gitmo-get-ups.
Lets send some kids dressed like nazis to the
synagogues while we are at it...
And how about some IDF soldier costumed trick or treaters
to Palestine.
What ARE you smoking?

5. Interesting point
First thing that came to my mind when I saw your post was Abu Ghraib - but I think some American prisons use orange jumpsuits, too (one in Arizona uses pink). It could have been accidental.

20. In Arizona they wear blue jeans and blue shirts. In the Maricopa
county jail they wear black and white stripes with pink underwear. (The sheriff thought if he made the underwear pink the inmates wouldn't steal them, but they turned into a souvenier item real quick. You can buy official Sheriff Joe pink underwear in some convenience stores and the inmates steal them like crazy.)

Although, I believe you're right about the orange jumpsuits for certain classifications of inmate. But, I think with the recent Abu Ghraib incident and the fact all of the people who have been paraded before video cameras and then beheaded were wearing orange jumpsuits make these not real suitable for Halloween this year. 7. Take a deep breath....
That is simply the updated version of the old black and white stripe prisoner costume.

Most of them that I have seen have also had "county jail" written on them.

10. Oh, I think it's WAAAYYY insensitive right now.
I love a free and open society where it is available though.

But hell yeah, that is pretty sick. I mean, are there Rodney Danderfield masks? If there were, they would pull them from the shelves wouldn't they?

17. You are not being too sensitive!
You are thinking clearly.
Not all that common in this country so I for one,
am glad to know you are out there.
Every ray of light counts these days.
They are far and few between lately,
especially here at DU.

Stripes had some kind of due process - Orange has none.

19. Exactly.
I am sure that Muslim families in America will
swarm to buy these "cute" costumes; sort of
a dress rehearsal for their kiddies for the day
our government detains them without charges
or access to legal representation.
Jesus, this country is has now broken the global idiot meter.

21. It's repulsive, yet I started thinking. . .

About all I can think of to "go as" would be a ghost or a pirate. I mean, think about the implications of dressing as a witch (demeaning Wiccans, pagans, etc.). . . a gypsy (mocking a racial/ethnic minority that is widely discriminated against). . . a hobo (laughing at the plight of the homeless.)

25. I can see it now...
On al Jazeera. Abu Graib photos contrasting with Halloween photos. The entire Arab world will think we're a bunch of psychotic, degenerate, fuckheads. And they'll be right.

I mean, I got a hell of a sick sense of humor, but dressing kids in prison orange at this time in history? Jeezus
