Time Ralph Reed Produces a name
From CNN's Inside Politics 9/12:

REED: No. I really don't think so. Look, the fact of the matter is that if you look at the record the president logged over 300 hours in the cockpit of an F-102 fighter jet. His squadron commander said he was one of the finest fighter jet pilots he had ever trained.

I personally talked to a gentleman who served with him at the air base in Montgomery where he reported and where this gentleman spent time with him. Look, the president honorably served and he was honorably discharged.

Of course Candy Crowley couldn't bring herself to press for an answer -- that would require journalism skills.

1. Why hasn't this 'gentleman' claimed the Trudeau reward?
Isn't Gary Trudeau offering $10,000 to anyone who served with Bush in Alabama? This guy (if he exists) sure is passing up a nice windfall...

2. If Crowleyt was a journalist, she'd have pusghed for an answer
As it is , these dumbasses can say and claim anything they want. Lies go unchallenged so often, they seem to be a main tool to use.

3. Either that, or they report the 'fact' of an accusation
Wasn't Koppel rationalizing that if someone makes an accusation, regarless of how unfounded, that reporting that accusation is news in and of itself?

It seems to me like this is a recipe for abuse. Example: my neighbor says Bush did a line with him last weekend, and I then call C-Span with this info. It spreads out over all the networks when a blog picks it up and forwards it to the news desks. Remember the Kerry intern non-story? It wasn't absolute fabrication - the intern did actually exist - but there certainly wasn't a basis for a REAL story. But that didn't seem to prevent it from being covered...

7. maybe it's the guy who hung out with Shrub at the campaign HQ
the way Reed phrased that is suspicious, if it's an exact quote.

5. LTC Bill Calhoun of FL is
Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 06:56 AM by luaneryder
who Reed is referring to, I think. He's been the only one I've heard of who said he saw * in AL while he was reading flight manuals in Calhoun's office. Why the man hasn't come forward to claim the rewards is a mystery and his story has holes in it due to the dates he said he saw *.

on edit: Googling Calhoun brings up several articles that basically read the same.
