MOYERS one hour documentary, "9/11: For the Record." Was it preventable?
Friday 9pm ET on PBS

This week a special one-hour NOW documentary, "9/11: For the Record."

* Was the tragedy preventable or inevitable? You decide.

Critics across the country are weighing in on this Friday's NOW saying:
"Of all the programs this year marking the anniversary of the attacks,
"9/11: For the Record" is the must-see, a sobering, heartbreaking hour"
(NEWSDAY); "a riveting review of the missteps and failures of successive
administrations" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS); and "Moyers details mistakes and
failures that will make your jaw drop in "9/11: For the Record." (BOSTON
PHOENIX).

"9/11: For the Record" addresses a critical question that continues to
haunt America's national psyche: how could the most powerful nation on
earth have been so utterly unprepared to protect its homeland? On the
eve of the third anniversary of 9/11, NOW analyzes the commission report
and connects the dots of what happened that day and the warning signs
leading up to it. Bill Moyers once again teams up with a long-time
colleague, the award-winning producer Sherry Jones, to take a look at
what the 9/11 Commission found. Jones, whose credits include,
"Watergate Plus 30: Shadow of History," highlights the agonizing close
calls, missteps, and outright failures of two administrations and
America's intelligence and security agencies in the months and years
leading up to 9/11.

Is somebody jerking O'Lielly's chain?

LOL

You know this is going to be first-rate journalism all the way, at a level O'Reilly and his ilk could never even concieve of.

Go Bill Moyers. Go now. Tell the truth, free from the BS "no-spin" spin that others stoop to -- just as you have for decades.

20. thanks....it wasn't broadcast here in republicanville
WHRO here in "Tidewater" VA (Norfolk, VA Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg area) is notorious for not showing anything that criticizes the bushies.

5. Yes, it was preventable.
Clinton warned Bush about bin Laden during the transition. Bush ignored the very real threat for EIGHT MONTHS while Ashcroft was investigatng head shops & Martha Stewart. He ignored specific warnings just the month before.

LIHOP,

8. I don't know why I bother watching ANY 9/11 reports by the media
Even Bill Moyers.

Nothing new in this show. Pretty much status quo. They did point the finger at the Bush administration harder than others, but that was the extent of it. Always there are many important pieces left out and questions left unanswered.

9. That was my disappointment, also.
I guess I was surprised, after seeing it, that so many thought it was an expose'.

I guess I should significantly lower my expectations.

17. Not only did Bush not prevent it, he allowed/planned it.
Disappointing. There's plenty of evidence that this administration was behind 9/11.

10. I thought this was fabulous
I don't think anyone has laid out the timeline
before with film in such a clear way...
I posted this on another thread, but it's worth
mentioning...

I thought the show covered a lot of the timeline
in just one hour, with good film...excellently
produced and edited.

But there was one glaring omission and that was
where Bin Laden came from...the whole episode
in the "80's and 90's where in Afghanistan, the U.S.
CIA sponsored the largest and most successful jihad in modern
history where it armed and trained several hundred
thousand fundementalist warriors against our
common enemy, the Soviet enemy and that many of those who
now targeted America were veterans of that earlier
CIA-sponsored jihad."*

* from Charlie Wilson's War, George Crile, pg. 508

Get George Crile on NOW to talk about that whole
period of time. I'm sure it would connect some
more dots for Americans.

25. And now Putin has to deal with this-
....the whole episode
in the "80's and 90's where in Afghanistan, the U.S.

history where it armed and trained several hundred
thousand fundementalist warriors against our
common enemy,

mopping up the Cold War will take a few years and more than one US administration

I will gladly accept that approach.

He may not have said all that we felt needed to be said. But, where else have you seen something more negative on TV to Bushco?

12. Pass it on!
On Sept. 11, if you see EVEN ONE Bush campaign ad using 9-11 imagery, call the White House. Pass it on. It's bad enough when he politicizes the deaths of 3,000 Americans on other days. But if he does it on Sept. 11, it'll be an outrage.
Please e-mail EVERYONE YOU KNOW and ask them to do the same!

absolutely amazing...

But was very sad that Clinton has a chance and backed off due to
political reasons...very sad indeed.

24. I saw the PBS show last night
bin Laden proclaimed his fatwa "Kill Americans" in 1997.

Woulda-shoulda-coulda-
We didn't get him then, we still don't have him now.

Will we get him next year if there is a different man in the whitehouse?

I think not.

22. I always enjoy Bill's shows.
Could 9-11 have been prevented? Read "Imperial Hubris," by the "Anonymous" CI analyst. Everyone in the agency knew that something was coming, but that the fellows at the top had their heads in the sand. If Gore had been president, it would not have happened.

26. Graham's book, too
He spells out twelve different opportunities to prevent the attack. Not after it started, but before the hijackers ever got on the planes.

Graham says that on the morning of 9/11 the FBI agent who authored the Phoenix memo went out onto his patio and wept.

Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 05:04 PM by soundfury
When I watched NOW with Bill Moyers his report basically said that when the
hijackers turned off the transponders, the F16Õs had NO WAY of finding the hijacked planes.

I mean, how does an F16 find enemy aircraft in the first place?

A 757 isnÕt exactly designed to be radar proof either.

911 was a lie

28. It was a needle in a haystack of air traffic
honestly, which commercial jet out of the hundred or so should these fighter guys shoot down ?
The turning off of one transponder masks itself among the non comercial air traffic of the private industry. That is a lot of "radar blips" from Ohio to the Atlantic.
