What will the bush say when Kerry quotes what Pat Buchanan said
...the war in Iraq is the “GREATEST MISTAKE THIS COUNTRY HAS MADE IN FORTY YEARS”

I don’t agree with much on what Buchanan says, but his new book makes the case why this administration should not be not be elected, even though I think he would like to see bush elected

1. Nah
Buchanan is a conservative and a nationalist, he doesn't like the Bush administration's record setting debts or imperialism or exporting of jobs. He'd be happy to see them go down.

3. How did he help Bush get elected?
Didn't he draw votes from Bush in 2000?

4. Just being in the Pub Party helps Bush...If he really wanted to defeat
Bush, he would quit the Pubs....Join with the Greenies or with Nader...lol.

5. In Florida
Buchanan got votes that were intended for Gore (cause of the Butterfly Ballot) he himself said as much, those votes could have given the election to Gore. :-(

6. you can't pin that one on buchanan
Edited on Mon Sep-06-04 07:01 AM by unblock
buchanan didn't design the ballot, and in any event, the dirty trick there wasn't to make it easy to vote for buchanan when you thought you were voting for gore; the point was to make it easy to vote for someone else when you thought you were voting for gore.

the fact that the name on the line opposite gore happened to be buchanan was coincidental. ANY other candidate's name would have accomplished the same thing.

7. Buchanan destroyed the Reform Party
as a national force, and threat to the Republicans. Perot had drawn votes away from Dole, and especially Bush I, giving the Dems an edge. (Repubs are promoting Nader in order to do the same to the Democrats.) Buchanan ran hard for the Reform Party nomination against Perot, won it, and pocketed the $10 million in federal financing. Then he virtually quit campaigning during the general election season, guaranteeing that the Reform Party would not achieve the threshold 5% of the vote to be elegible for federal financing in future elections. Whether he was put up to this by the Republican machine or not is an open question, but his actions demonstrate clear intention.
Despite Buchanan's savage critiques of the Bush administration, he says that he will vote for Bush because he wants "4 more Antonin Scalias on the Supreme Court." (shudder)
That said, I think that it would be a great tactic for Kerry to use Buchanan's words to take shots at Bush from his right. "Pat Buchanan was correct in saying that..." sort of thing.
