In a sense, it's like a 'voluntary' Nielsen rating. Anyone who wants their surfing activities to be counted can install the Alexa 'spyware' and have themselves be the 'standard' for Alex's specious statistics.

If, for example, FReepers encouraged each other to use Alexa spyware, then that'd skew the results that Alexa publishes. There're other simple ways those 'results' can be skewed as well.

I regard such crap as a social virus. While it's superficially 'voluntary,' it exploits an adversarial 'me first' attitude. They clearly serve their own ad revenues primarily. There's no telling what other 'marketing' data they're peddling.
