Hackers Take Aim at GOP Sites
"Online protests targeting GOP websites could turn out to be more than symbolic during this month's Republican National Convention, possibly blocking a critical communications tool for the party," Wired reports.

"Hardened electronic activists are planning to jam up the servers of GeorgeWBush.com, GOP.com and related websites, once the Republican National Convention gets underway Aug. 29."

Says one hacker: "We want to bombard (the Republican sites) with so much traffic that nobody can get in." http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,64602,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_1

Well, this is one kind of sabotage I can support. We at DU should do our part, spreading the word not only on DU Forums but on other Message boards you might visit. I'll tell the Howardstern BB members to do it, even though those forums suck because it has a chaotic unsegmented format in which 90 percent of threads die instantly with 3 views and no responses.

1. Enjoy the flaming that you're about to get.

But I personally have no qualms about sabotaging them. On the other hand I think hacking efforts should be concentrated on counter-hacking the election results.

2. we could bring it down by just all our groups clicking on it at once
that would overload the server and crash it for awhile

3. I wouldn't encourage doing anything illegal.
Especially now that hacking can be prosecuted as terrorism under the patriot act. The administration would love to make an example of someone.

7. It's illegal to encourage message boarders to flood a website?
Are you sure about that. I don't know the first thing about "hacking" (other than that the movie Hackers wasn't at all acurate) but I don't even think that that sort of thing falls under the technical definition of hacking.

And I'm one of the people who has discouraged mass protests in Manhattan for the RNC convention. But I don't think that this, what I'm advocating, is something the right can use against us.

4. Hi, Agent Mike!
OK, I profess my ignorance regarding this portion of laws regulating Internet traffic and commerce, but keep in mind that the Secret Service watches DU like a hawk. If it even seems illegal, I don't know that we should go promoting it. This is DU, not 2600.

5. This is stupid. Just dumb.
Will this provide any better publicity to the Kerry campaign than, say, riots at the Republican Convention?

No.

It's the same thing. Don't turn Bush and his Republican thugs into the "good guys".

8. how?
give me a probable example of how this could negatively affect us. I really doubt any undecideds could be swayed by a page A19 story about a flood of web traffic overloading some websites.

12. Vandalism in general gives them something to focus on
as they disregard the issues and try to paint us as hoodlums.

9. Probably the PNAC'ers hacking their own sites.
Asscrotch has been trying to destroy the Internet under the guise of "fighting terrorism" all along. This type of activity would only give the son of a bitch ammo.

Bottom line, I'm not advocating such behavior at all, but if you're good enough to do it, be good enough to cover your tracks completely. ;)

11. What the so called "hackers" would do
is send a DDOS or a (Distributed Denial of Service Attack) by using thousands of unknowing computers to flood a website thus knocking it off the internet. This is not a good thing and can be used against any websites server. People that do this type of thing are not Hackers and should be caught punished no matter what site they attack.

10. Get Ready To Be X-Treme
Some call this machination extreme! You better get ready to throw your body into the gears of this vile, odious, machine. And prepare yourself to get super extreme if this election is bamboozled from us again. The future of this country depends on it. In this case scenario nice guys will finish last!
