Carol Moseley-Braun in 2004
Edited on Thu Jul-10-03 10:09 PM by Coffee Coyote
I am comfortable with her platform, her integrity, and her record.

I have NO problem throwing my support behind her until the corporations decide upon the nominee next Spring.

Some highlights of her statement, with my emphasis added:

Now is the time to rediscover the Constitution.
Individual liberties, checks and balances, the separation of powers: All these are the distinctive bequest of American democracy, America's great and lasting contribution. Today, all of these are in danger.

Congress should not have abdicated to the President the power to engage Americans in a unilateral, preemptive war. And the President should not walk away from our allies, the United Nations, and the systems of international law to which America has contributed so much.

A climate of fear cannot make a safe America. Our individual liberties are the source of our strength. Our freedom is the root of private enterprise and citizen initiative - the source of our prosperity.

America has come far in making good on the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence - the fundamental political compact that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once called a Declaration of Intent. It is not reversing our progress, but forging ahead in this intent that is truly patriotic.

Our economy is in the doldrums, not because of any natural phenomenon or even the threat of war, but because of failed leadership. In the 1990s the Democratic Party balanced the budget and set the country on a course of lasting prosperity. Today the surplus is gone. The nation has generated two successive years of deficit with projections of deficits far into the future. This money was squandered not on building the nation or strengthening national defense but on tax cuts for the wealthy - a recipe that has failed in the past and will fail again.

When I was born, African Americans could not vote, and women had little choice in the running of their lives. The progress of our nation gave me, like so many others, the opportunity to excel, and instilled in me the duty to serve. In this campaign, I will listen to those across the nation who are working to renew America's hope. I will voice the American Dream of freedom and opportunity for all - and the prospect of peace, prosperity and progress that can be ours once again.

3. I hate being cynical!!
But I have played this game too long - not as long as some, but as an avid student of history and the presidency all my life, I have seen enough.

For now, I will enjoy the freedom of conscience and offer all the support I can. I have been undecided for some time, but have been heavily interested in her candidacy, and I perk up when she speaks in debates and addresses.

Yeah, I will watch this with new eyes now.

5. She was my first choice,
before I bought in to "supporting a candidate who can win." Thanks for this thread.

6. Oh Carol!
Carol Moseley-Braun is one of my favorites of the announced crowd and although I am now supporting Howard Dean, I am very glad that she is in the Primaries and I hope she sticks with it.

She has perspective and wisdom on many issues that are presented in the Candidate Forums that the men just don't address.

She speaks with frank talk and presents thought out approaches to every issue she confronts.

I am a big Carol Moseley-Braun fan!

7. Integrity? her Record?????
Obviously, you never had this SCUM-BAG as one of your Senators.

I have.

She was a MAJOR disappointment to many many many Illinois Democrats- which is why she could not get elected to a second term.

She has no place running for President-of-the-United States...and although * has set the expectations bar pretty low, CMB is still unfit to the office.

Carol Marin is one of the more respected, if not heavily watched, news people in Chicago and she sets out the case against Carol Mosely-Braun.

Some choice graphs:

One example. Before freshmen senators go to work in Washington, there is an orientation program to help them learn the lay of the land. You skipped it. Rather than roll up your sleeves right away and show you were both symbol and substance, you hopped a flight to Nigeria and paid your respects to the dictator of the most populous country in Africa, Gen. Sani Abacha. Despite Abacha's hideous record on human rights, including the assassination of his enemies, you remained a periodic visitor to the country and you were the lone member of the Senate and the lone member of the Congressional Black Caucus who opposed sanctions against that repressive regime....
