LA Times Poll: 50-45 support Recall: Davis is gaining!!
This is the closest it has been in the polls. The La Times says only 50% would vote to recall Gray Davis while 45% are opposed.

The danger for Dems according to the poll is that more GOP voters are geared up to vote than Dems--shades of the 2002 congressional elections?

The poll suggests that GOP voters are solid in support of the recall while Democrats are strongly opposed--Dems are coming home.

1. Davis is a vampire, I tell you
He rises from the dead over and over and over. I don't much like the man, but I hate this recall.

2. Clinton's strategy is paying off
Good for Davis to follow that sound advice.

I heard that Al Gore will be visiting California to help Davis fight the recall, but don't know when.

6. Could it be that the Repukes overplayed a weak hand?
The message just might get out that this recall is little more than a ploy to short-circuit the system, and the voters might not appreciate the effort. While the Bushistas haven't jumped in with both feet and are trying to maintain a disinterested air regarding the recall, look for the backlash (if it comes) to smack them in the fanny, too.

They will richly deserve it.

7. Polls are all over the place, this one is at 58%

Another scientific California poll.

Incidentally, I think the recall vote will come down to a few percentage points and Davis will stay. If not, he will barely lose and Bustamante will take over.

8. Not quite! According to the PPIC poll, Davis's goose is cooked!
Support for California recall grows

Poll shows 58 percent would vote to oust Davis

NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 22 — Support for the drive to recall California Gov. Gray Davis is widening, with 58 percent of likely voters saying they would vote to remove him from office if the election were held today, a new poll shows.

THE POLL by the Public Policy Institute of California also shows that Davis’ performance ratings are at historic lows, with 72 percent saying that they disapprove of his handling of his job.

The poll, released Thursday, indicates that if Davis were recalled — and he likely would be, with only 36 percent of likely voters saying they would vote “no” — 23 percent would replace him with Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and 18 percent with Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat.

None of the 133 other candidates topped 5 percent in the poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

9. Not ready to declare Bustamonte the winner in 2006 yet...Consider
Bill Lockyer...State Attorney General
Phil Angelides...State Treasurer
Steve Westly...State Comptroller

Any one of these guys would give Bustamonte a run for his money, even if he were the incumbent...

10. Ronnie Raygun nearly bankrupted the state of California when
Edited on Sat Aug-23-03 12:30 AM by annak110
he was governer, but then again when he occupied the office of president his keepers tried to bankrupt the country then (as now). He also could have been brought before the courts on felony charges and impeached (Iran/Contra) Someone mentioned impeachment but the Republicans said, "Oh no, the country can't stand another failed presidency." I guess they meant "another failed Republican presidency.

All over the country states are slipping into bankrupcy and many have Republican Governers. In all the states that allow recall elections and also have Republican Governers, Democrats should set up a demand for recall of those governors. They probably wouldn't succeed but it might help to call attention to the absurdity of the California situation.

11. The key is to prevent the right wingers from voting Davis out of office
They want him gone ASAP. Will the people in the poll vote?
