Would you support prayer in school

... if children could pray to God that Bush lose the election so the nation can be restored and freedom can "reign" once again?

Pray For Reason

4. Absolutely not.
Who's prayers? Catholic? Baptist? Methodist? Fundamentalists? Jewish? Muslim? Greek Orthodox?
Nope, can't say I can approve prayers in school. They belong in church.

6. Nobody said kids can't pray. Many probably do before tests.
There just can't be any prayer organized, suggested by or otherwise supported by a public school. Not even for the junta to be defeated would I stand for any organized prayer in a public school.

Silent prayer can happen when ever and where ever. Nobody is denied that. But woe be onto any dolt who tries to cram their prayer down my throat by trying to force an official program in a public school.

7. Any child can say such a prayer as much as they want
they shouldn't be led in prayer by school officials, or IMO lead other students in prayer in school.

I'm sure plenty said lots of prayers earlier this year to pass their exams.

8. I guess the tone of the question wasn't picked up
I mean, the notion of mass prayer (which the right-wing is all in favor of) to God to save the nation FROM Bush ... oh, never mind.

:)

9. No--I do not support any religion at all in publicly funded schools
period.

Praying can be done in churches. That is the proper venue for it.

Not in schools where there is a mix of children of all religions.

There is NO reason for prayer in schools, other than the desire of Christians to infiltrate the public school system in their insane quest to proseletyze, take over by sheer arrogance and bullying, no matter who they have to bully or run over, or disrespect to do it--for the baby Jesus of course.

The same baby Jesus who commanded the armies in Iraq, as many were praying to this baby to save their soldiers over the other soldiers who were deemed the enemy, even though they did nothing at all to us.

13. In a nutshell…..
as President Kennedy stated at a press conference in 1962 after the Supreme Court ruled that prayer in the public schools was unconstitutional, the solution was to "pray a good deal more at home and attend our churches with a good deal more fidelity."

I think that says it all....

14. Teaching religion (or not) is the parent's job.
Teachers are already overworked.
I was in the 4th grade back in the early 70's and I remember my teacher reading to us from the Bible and leading us in prayer in a public school. I assume she knew she was breaking the law.
That was some peer pressure.

16. It is impossible to prevent a person from praying
Prayer can be silent and uttered in the heart without any outward signs.

When fundamentalists talk about "school prayer," they mean group prayer led by teachers or students that will allow the fundie students to show off their piety by making those long, rambling lists of instructions and information for God that fundies are so fond of: "And we just want you to know, Lord, that we understand it's your will that we all vote Republican, so we ask you to support your servant George W. Bush, cause you know he's a righteous man, and hallelujah, we praise your name for that..." :puke:

17. GOD BLESS GEORGE BUSH ... or is that redundant?

"Our purpose is to bring you documentation to our media-supported claim that George W. Bush is indeed not only our nation's leader, but our spiritual lighthouse and embodied salvation."

BUSH IS LORD

18. only in religous schools
or voluntarily but not during school hours at a public school.

My public school had prayers and religous meetings all the time but always before school. When it was warm, they would pray around the flag pole for some reason.

19. To quote JL, IMAGINE
Imagine if those people of faith who are against Bush marched on Washington, with placards and prayers, asking the Lord to free the nation of the evildoer's grip, to rid America of Bush, and to restore His blessings on America. It would just drive Bush and the religious right nuts because it's something I'm sure they've never seen before. A mass of people professing their love for Christ (or Allah) or whomever, and praying for the nation's well-being and beseeching God to free America from bondage.

The religious right would be apoplectic. Well, it was just a thought.

20. Praying for an election?

Petition the lawd with prayer?

If you "pray for votes", just who, exactly, will cast them? Will voters miraculaously appear from the early morning fog, al registered and everything? Can you exit-poll a voter sent by divine providence?

I never saw anything wrong with the concept of "God helps those that help themselves". Work for victory, don't give up. Spread the word. Vote yer ass off. Get votes by encouraging the non-voter to vote. Convert some mods and Naderites. Old fashioned work will win this, not faith in myth.

(Godless Gearhead respects the religious beliefs of all peoples until those beliefs are pushed into GGs face in which case all pretense of civility will be deemed by GG to be expendable)
