Rice compared to Joan of Arc? A young woman's view of "feminism"

I found this link posted elsewhere - What a bunch of hooey! I figured I'd post it here so ya'll can pick it apart in the way only DUers can do! Have at it! :)

If promoting strong females were your goal, as feminist’s claim is their goal, would you not look for popular examples of successful females, so girls could look up to and strive to emulate them? Condoleeza Rice comes to mind as a strong role model for young girls.

Miss Rice entered college at 15, graduated cum laude at 19, and then went on to earn Master’s and PhD degrees. She is a concert pianist. She knows several different languages. She served as a provost at Stanford University, and currently serves as the National Security Advisor in the most powerful country in the world, during one of its most trying times.

She personifies excellence. Watching her speak has always been awe-inspiring. She can command an audience and speak with authority. The fact that she is a black woman is insignificant, but if adds to her glory, then so be it.

In fact, out of the absolute circus made after the 9-11 attacks, with Colin Powell begging for peaceful resolutions (after terrorists attacked American civilian land), it was Condoleeza who provided the enduring, but lonely voice in favor of America. Being in that thicket, no doubt, was grating. Imagine being the only person willing to defend doing the right, but dangerous thing, and to be the only female surrounded by men, doing so. Condoleeza Rice can be considered the 21st century’s Joan of Arc – a true individualist and a true hero.

5. Actually, they are a source for examples of exactly the
WRONG-thinking crap we are often up against. This is how a great deal of people (men AND women) really feel about the women's movement - and it's quite scary. Know your enemy.

3. Rice is morally certain
..that all her BS is absolutely correct, she sends men into battle, maybe she hears voices.

Of course, the Maid of Orleans actually went in and fought those battles, and devised winning strategies, so that's where the parallel broke down. She was also gruesomely executed for her efforts, while Rice will undoubtedly die in a nice, comfy bed surrounded by all the finest machines powerful people are entitled to.

7. I respect
I respect the fact that Ms. Rice is an intelligent woman, I just don't agree with her opinions. She also doesn't seem like a real role-model type. She's always following around President Bush as if she should be wearing a maid outfit. YES MASSA!

8. Andrea Yates was driven crazy by her looney husband...
a Republican religious fanatic. That's one fact that got left out.

And Condoleeza Rice is a liar: "No one could have predicted they would fly airplanes into buildings." The national security bureaucracy under her had predicted exactly that and was conducting an exercise predicated on that idea on 9/11. (A very strange coincidence, don't you think?)

She also lied about the uranium whopper mouthed by Bush in the SOTU speech. Again, "no one" at her level had any idea there were any questions about the veracity of that claim. LIAR!

9. The only comparison
I want to see is from an old Irish tune

Vanished Like The Snow

Joan came riding from the rain
Everybody knows the story
England burnt her in the rain
Their's the shame and her's the glory
Everybody knows the story
All the while they come and they go
England's shame and France's glory
When she vanished like the snow

Just vanish like the snow Condi you are no Joan d'Arc

10. watching Rice speak is awe-inspiring?
funny how different people can get different impressions. When I see Condi speak, I'm so distracted by her shakiness I can barely focus on what she's saying. I have to go to transcripts, and then I'm distracted by how much she lies.

11. Rice is a corporate crony who ignored the terrorist warnings that
led to 9-11-01. Thats why this feminist doesn't support her. I prefer Mae Jemison, the first African American woman astronaut as a model for young feminists today.

12. what a load of codswallop
"Why? Some may say its because she is a Republican. But it’s much more than that – it’s because Condoleeza is a strong woman. She defies all their complaints of a racist, sexist America. She doesn’t buy into their victim mentalities. Condoleeza Rice, a woman who embraces justice, ambition independence, is to feminists what sunlight is to Dracula."

I can admire the intelligence and ambition of Condoleeza Rice - without respecting her viewpoint. In fact, if it weren't for suffragettes and feminists, Ms. Rice would not be where she is today.

Clearly mensnewsdaily is a wonderful site for feminist info. :eyes:

14. Exactly -

I wonder, then, if these "qualities" Rice has are what make "feminists" hate her so much - what is the reason all the Republicans HATE Hilary?

Since, as this wealth of knowledge and clarity points out (ha HA) the first electable woman will be REPUBLICAN. Sheesh....

Anyway - I was curious and clicked the link to "Amber's" website and am readon some of her other articles...

She's a total moran. She uses socialist and communist interchangably as meaning the same thing. She's a total Randian - yet another sign she doesn't have the faintest clue just WTF she is talking about.

I read a funny (or would be funny if she didn't actually BELIEVE it) article she wrote about "why liberal women hate men". That one was RICH.

Apparantly, in her world, it's because liberal men are animalistic cads with no morals who don't know how to treat a woman -

She concludes that liberal women hate men because the only exposure they have to testosterone are liberal men.

Doesn't get outside the bubble of her own mind much, does she?

15. Is she an idiot savant?
She appears to have an amazing grasp on what it means to be rich, white and privileged. Does she know anything about being poor, black, and underprivileged? Somehow, I suspect that the real Joan would have marched at the head of the army of poor folk, not as standard bearer for the robber barons.

Maybe a better analogy would be to compare Condi to the Aztec woman who became Cortez's mistress and helped the Spaniards destroy her own people.

17. She probably got Rice confused with Bush
He's the one in the administration who thinks God talks to him.

Oh, wait. And Ashcroft.

18. Check out that author's website.
It brings to mind the "I've been Ayn Randed" line from the Paul Simon song. Oh, boy.

As for Ms. Rice and her credentials, I don't doubt that she's about 400,000 times more qualified than one George W. Bush. She's certainly a good deal more poised and articulate than he is.

But I grow impatient with all those who take it upon themselves to declare which figures feminists should back. Given the Bush administration's actions (not merely rhetoric, but acions) on issues such as family planning, health care, Head Start, and the like, there are few reasons for a feminist to support the administration.

And the Andrea Yates discussion in the article? Please. Mrs. Yates was, like many other men and women who commit violent acts, clearly suffering from an extreme form of mental illness. The warning signs were there, and I think all of us, feminist or not, wish a successful intervention had taken place before the tragedy occurred. The fact that Pawlik uses the tragedy to bash feminists says more about her than feminists.

20. Jeanne d'Arc Sang "Nobody's Seen the Trouble i've Seen"?
(Really, Condo sang this the weekend after 9-11 at Camp David for Shrub et al.) -----------other songs she sang, "Old Man River" and other Broadway hits.
